I THE MICHIGAN DAILY 3,At"I"' rare xe 'Winning Michigan in Championship Form.. .Agai By DALE SIELAFF Michigan is winning again. Michigan has one starting quarterback again. Michigan is gaining on the ground ..again. Michigan's defense is as tough as any in the Big Ten again. After taking everything in '64, the '65 Wolverines found them- selves with a very tough act to follow. And for the first six games, it looked as if they might not look like a. winner for the whole year. But in the last two weeks, the offense has come alive, and the defense is holding the opposition as they did in the championship season. Coming off a 50-14 romp over Wisconsin, Michigan faced an Il- linois team Saturday that had won three straight, including a 21-0 win over Purdue. Easy Does It At the end of the first half, it wasn't much of a contest, with Michigan leading 17-3. 'Speedster Carl Ward accounted for the first two Michigan touch- downs on a six-year swing pass from Wally Gabler, and a one- yard "jump" over tackle. Rick Sygar kicked a 24-yard field goal just before the half to put the Illini too far down to come back. Gabler has probably been the big factor in the Michigan resurg- ence. Platooning with Dick Vidmer for the first three games, neither Gabler or Vidmer seemed to be able to generate much of an of- fense. Decision Reached Then against Michigan State, as Head Coach Bump Elliott says, "We had pretty much decided on Gabler as our quarterback, but then he was injured. He had play- ed well all season, and has been doing a fine job." Since the State game, with Gab- ler at the helm, the Wolverines lost to then undefeated Purdue, 17-15, in what many termed Michigan's finest game of the year. And against Minnesota, with Gabler again in charge, Michigan fell 14-13 on a missed two-point conversion with less than two minutes left in the game. The Wisconsin game provided the coming out for the Wolverines. They snapped a four game losing streak, and rolled their way with Gabler running the squad until the game was on ice. Toast for Champaign Saturday in Champaign, Gab- ler accounted for 192 yards, 68 on 11 rushes and 124 on a 7-for-12 pass completion record. Coach Elliott feels that the switch to the single quarterback was not the only reason for the Michigan comeback, not by a long shot, but he adds, "Wally gained a lot of experience and confidence through playing all the time, but I don't think that's the only an- swer to the two-quarterback, one- quarterback question." A lot of people think confidence is the answer. Ask Earl Morrall. Could the preseason high rating have had anything to do with the early slump of the Wolverines? Elliott feels that it could have made a difference, but adds, "It's no great problem. We probably tried too hard and were a little tighter than normal. But now we're not hurting ourselves like we did before with our own mis- takes. We're putting everything together, and overall play has im- proved." It Showed It showed against the Illini, with Michigan leading in total offense 423 yards to 254 for Il- linois. Fullback Dave Fisher, who had been Michigan's workhorse and top ground gainer for the past few weeks, ran fakes into the line on almost every first half play, with the result that the other backs enjoyed relatively easy going. In the passing department,.Jack Clancy added to his single season receiving record by picking off four from Gabier fore 64 yards. all coming in the middle of first half touchdown drives. No Passing Zone Michigan didn't pass in the second half, and Elliott explained his strategy by saying, "We ran the first drive 70 yards for the score, and we had' a few pass plays called, but they came off as runs, and they worked, so we stay- ed on the ground." The Illinois offense was missing its top halfback Cyril Pinder due to an injury and Jim Grabowski played his usual game, rushing for 95 yards, but without doing any real damage. Elliott com- mented, "We had two or three different defenses for Grabowski, because we felt we had to stop his line smashes. We set up against him, and while we didn't stop him cold, he didn't hurt us." charged for three, but on third Michigan showed its defense to down, Bob Mielke dropped Fred be tough in the first four minutes, Custardo for a six-year loss back with the Illini on the seven with to the ten, and Illinois' only pene- first down. Rick Volk threw Sam tration deeper than the 38 ended Price for no gain. Grabowski in a field goal by Custardo.
