How important is winning to1 Cecchini? "It's the name of theI game, there's no doubt about that.! And I've never seen winning in- terfere with good sportsmanship1 either. It's kind of like Mike Haddard, my high school coach, used to say. 'When you win a game, you walk down the street. When you lose, you want to take the al-i leys'." Gaining All-City and All-State< honors at Pershing High, Cecchini received scholarship offers from Annapolis, Nebraska and Wichita among others. "But there was no real choice. I had always admired Michigan and when I got an offer to go here, I took it like that." Tom Cecchini's career high- light-Lineman of the Week. Rose Bowl game, six pass interceptions including one last week against Wisconsin? Nope. Cecchini isn't that kind of a guy. Team Effort "Sure, I have a career highlight. It was last year's Minnesota game. We were leading 19-6 and march- ing down the field late in the fourth quarter. Minnesota inter- cepted a pass and got a quick TD. making it 19-12. We got the ball again but had to give it up with two minutes left. "Our punt was bad and they got the ball and drove right down to our seven where it was first and goal. For four downs we held them virtually without a yard. Personally I didn't do anything. Not even one tackle or anything. But it was such a tremendous team effort, and when we walked off the field having saved the game, I just had the greatest feel- ing. I really can't explain it." Tom Cecchini doesn't have to explain it. But Jim Grabowski better watch out for it. i jury. Three years in a row, a defensive standout? Well, two and a half. Cecchini started the first four games his sophomore year, and had already made a name for himself. Then, against Michigan State, he went down hard on a tackle, and didn't get up for two weeks. The diagnosis was torn ligaments, a la Detwiler, and surgery ended Cecchini's sophomore year as spectacularly as it had begun. An unknown until spring prac- tice of his freshman year, Cec- chini had impressed the coaching staff immensely in the spring drills. Of course you'd never know it from talking to him. "I thouxght they were going to move me down instead of up." Ha! Down, ha! He was promoted to the Blue (first string) team, the man of the Week." And UPI also named him to the All Big Ten de- fensive unit. Wolverine Captain His teammates knew he was; there, too. That's probably why; they elected him captain for this: season. Tom Cecchini-the mod-, est kid from Detroit-a leader? Hell, yes. Says Elliott, "He's been a real good captain. He shows initia- tive. He knows the pulse of the squad, and he's respected as a per- son. Someday Tom will make an excellent coach. He likes people and knows how to handle them.1 And he has good knowledge of the{ game." Cecchini explained what he tries to do as captain. "The main thing is to set an example by hustling and working hard at practice. Last week suave, sophisticated New Yorker Abraham Beame was spotted filling out his Grid Picks selections at The Daily. Among others, Beame had chosen Buckley U. to knock Lindsay Tech out of contention in the tough New York City League. Beame exuded con- fidence-at the bottom of his selection sheet was the stamp "approved by LBJ." Nonetheless, Lindsay Tech was victorious last week, and Beame was edged out in the contest by one G.O.Party. Too bad. Beame could have won two tickets to the Michigan Theatre, now showing "The Ipcress File." Don't be afraid to try your luck. Come to The Daily at 420 May- nard St. and fill out your entry.
