Name: Tom Polonic. For many Michigan hockey fans it will seem unbelievable, but it remains a fact that Tom Polonic, whose honors and awards would cover anyone's hockey stick, for- feited his senior year of college hockey at Michigan for a chance to work up through the Toronto farm system. Polonic's decision was made completely without the knowledge of Coach Al Renfrew who had been relying on the burly defense- man to be the cornerstone and building block of Michigan's de- fense this year. Reflecting on the loss Renfrew said yesterday, "He was a fine hockey player, but we are going to have to get along without him. The first news I had of his decision was when I called his home this fall, and his mother said that he might go to the Leaf' training camp." Polonic Attends Camp The facts are still sketchy but they go something like this: a few weeks ago, Polonic attended the Toronto training camp and was offered a five-game tryout with their farm club in Tulsa. The Tulsa club is one set up for the development of young hockey tal- ent. The team is only allowed to carry five players over the age' of 25 on their roster. According TOP CANDIDATE: Clancy Dra to Barry MacDonald, the Tulsa team is highly respected, and in; order to make it a player has to "be a real good pro prospect." There was never any question as to Polonic's ability in college hockey from the very first time he stepped on the Coliseum ice two years ago. That was one of Mich- igan's big hockey years with Po- Ionic and Roger Galipeau on de- fense, Gordie Wilkie, Gary But- ler, and Jack Cole on offense, and Bob Gray in the nets, the Wolverines marched all the way to the NCAA championship. Along the way they won the WCHA, Big Ten, and Press Trophy titles. All-America That season Polonic was voted to the WCHA All-Star team, the NCAA All-tournament team, and the All-America squad for the western part of the country. The Toronto defenseman was also sixth in conference scoring which was slightly unbelievable for a defenseman. He was the only defenseman in the top 15 scorers that year. Last year the graduation losses were heavy and Coach Renfrew had to forego some of the wide- open play that had made Michi- gan famous the year before and stress the fundamentals of hock- ey to his young team. As a result, the defenseman had to remain on the blueline to protect the goal- ie a lot more than the year be- fore which cut into Polonic's scor- ing; however, he did tally three cws Praise goals and eight assists which was second best among league defense- men. Captain Martin Gone Among the other names that will be missing from last year's fifth-place team in the WCHA will be Dave Newton, Wilfred Martin, captain, Pierre Dechaine, Alex Hood, and Marty Read. This group served as the core of Mich- igan's team last year, and will have to be replaced by juniors who picked up a year's experience last season, four of last year's regulars and a few newcomers. Renfrew is shooting for three forward lines this year as he has in the past. Wakabayashi Injured The work of the offensive lines has been hampered somewhat since Michigan's All-America cap- tain and center, Mel Wakabaya- shi, will be out of action for an- other few days with strained liga- ments in his knee. The injury is not regarded as serious and the "Mighty Mite" is expected to be back on the ice soon. Trying out for the other two center spots are Bob Baird, who is filling in on the first line for the injured Wakabayashi; Bruce Koviak, Bob Boysen, and Ron Ul- lyot. Both Koviak and Ullyot are sophs. Herman in Nets In the nets a sophomore, Har- old Herman, is making last year's starter, Greg Page, "really work to keep his job," according to Ren- frew. Herman's work shows a "lot of potential" and thus Renfrew regards the goalie spot as a little more solid and consistent than last season when Page faced the al- most impossible job of filling in for Bob Gray after being out of competitive hockey for a full year. "What this team lacks in ex- perience," said Renfrew yesterday, "they make up for in spirit and enthusiasm and a lot of times that will make up for some other deficiencies. 'I think that the league will be rough, but we have the potential to go somewhere." DEPEN DABLE IMPORT SERVICE We have the MECHANICS and the PARTS. Clancy's four pass catches for 104 yards in Michigan's 50-14 rout of Wisconsin gave him a total of 34 for a season record at a school which produced such legendary receivers as Bennie Oosterbaan, Ron Kramer, John Henderson and Lowell Perry. The 29-year-old Koufax was a unanimous winner in 1963, the year he. was named the National League's most valuable player. Although handicapped by an arthritic pitching arm, Koufax compiled the best earned run av- erage in the major leagues, 2.04; the most wins, 26; the most in- nings pitched, 336, and the most strikeouts, 382. The voting by a committee of the Baseball Writers Association of America was done prior to the World Series and was based on regular season performances only.
