'V, " " PAGE FOUR THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1965 CTTNTIAY_ OCTOBER 18. 1965 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Buckle-On Bootery The fashionable foot looks ready for skiping, or fresh from hop- scatch. New York has borrowed, once more, from the realm of childhood to create the new height in shoe style. The toes are blunted, or even circular. Casual shoes fea- ture demi-lacings in the front, or a little girl strap across the in- step. The whole effect of the shoe is further softened by the use of huggable suede or the most fragile of leathers. Also, much of the casual footwear this year features small rising heels, reminiscent of tap dance equipment. Dress shoes are riddled with cookie cuts, for a darily bare foot. The sling-back pump, with its shy jet heel, is the order of the day. More extreme designs slash away the whole back of the shoe, in the style of bedroom slippers. Toe ornamentation ranges from the familiar lacings or straps, to strips of multi-colored leather. But, once again, the trend is definitely away from vicious pointed toes and acrophobic heels. The final word in foot-wear is the boot, popularized by Courrege. This particular boot is not of the rain-and-weather variety, but makes its entrance in turbulent cocktail hours. It is white and bare, reaching a scant few inches up the calf. Courrege sees his plain, tubular shoe fashion as a new wave. The first approach of high g ometric style to the foot. Fashion Finds What Little Girl Is Made Of Mesmerized by the flurry of fashion issuing forth from the Little Girl Boutique, the modern woman refuses to cross her thres- hold without her white stockings, smocked dress and Maryjane shoes. She is no longer a fascinat-, ing, doe-eyed woman of mystery, but an open-faced go-go girl. Even when she borrows from the masculine world of fashion, she wears the poor "boy" sweater rather than the "man" tailored shirt. Her aging face, an old friend after twenty years, must now be abandoned in the best Shirley Temple tradition. The fresh-from-the-pram motif requires that the devote affect the "total look" of childhood. She must don skirts that are raised 3-4 inches above the knee.' The leggy effect is accentuated by white stockings and flat pumps. The high heel is as obsolete as yesterday's Little Archie comic book. Dresses are loose-fitting, the bust almost nonexistent. Suspen- ders are big, as are lacy collars and knitted bonnets. The face too must be that of a child. To accentuate the wide-eyed look of innocence, the arched eye- brow which once suggested sophis- tication must go. This is accom- plished with either powder or long bangs. A merry-go-round blush is "in" as are pale, pale lips. Having affected the Little Girl Look, the middle-aged teenager now drags at her chocolate cigaret, confident that she is, at last, in vogue. Tuxedos, once thought of as bulky and un- comfortable have found new fame as a result of the introduction of lightweight synthetics in this line. In addition to the traditional black, tuxedos now are available in many colors and patterns. Es- Madras tuxedo for use in the sum- pecially popular seems to be the mer months. The tuxedo shirt has been mod- ified from a lacy affair, to flat work woven into elegant design. In some cases, men are using buttons instead of the usual jewel- ed studs. Cuff links however are still a necessary accessory to the proper formal picture. A popular misconception of the tuxedo as a high priced attire, only for those with money to spare is drastically miscast. Com- plete tuxedo outfits including shirt studs and tie are available from $55. Formal wear can, however, run into three figuredprices, de- pending upon the taste and the budget. A tuxedo is an essential and worthwhile addition to the gentleman's wardrobe, and should be used when the occasion calls for it. FI Elliott special - good for < year only.
