HT THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, SEPTEIVIBE;R '114.1965 HT 'IDE MICHIGAN Dilly FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1965 onde Star Startles Ferry Field Onlookers By STEVE GALL "Hey, guys, over here. Look at the track team. Hey, not bad. Some beautiful strides. Yeah-he's got a nice kick. OK-Let's go see football practice. Wait a second- Who's that over there in blue with that blond hair? Hey, I don't be- lieve it-Look at her-she's pretty good." Slowly, but deliberately this blond approaches with her long golden hair flopping up and down rhythmically. Shep passes noncha- lantly among these startled on- lookers, acknowledges a hello from a runner and moves swiftly away. This is the typical impression Francie Kraker gives when she runsl. Miss Kraker is something of a novelty around track circles here. She is a national champion with high hopes for the future. Francie, a soft-spoken freshman, won the 1964 National AAU Wom- en's 800 meter run. She has com- peted in numerous events around the country with constant suc- cess. She has. done 2:12 for the half-mile and hopes to break 2:10 soon. Francie, a native of Ann Arbor, started running in the ninth Quiet Zotte Because of numerous com- plaints from spectators last season, no horns or unusual noise-making devices will be al- lowed inside the Michigan Stadium at football games this fall, the Board in Control of Intercollegiate Athletics has decided. Persons appearing at the gates with these devices will be required to check them at Gate Nine. Their property may be picked up after the game. . ' grade when her physical educa- tion teacher, the wife of her pres- ent coach Ken Simmons, interest- ed her in competing after she sped through the 600-yd. run phase of a physical fitness test in record time. "She's a real competitor with great potential," Coach Simmons, a physical education instructor, explains. "Francie wins graciously, but loses humbly. She's a real lady." With a keen eye on the future, Simmons-is now working Francie on long-distance running. She runs one and a half daily in around nine minutes. Keep Running "I want to keep her running. This overdistance work is good training," Coach Simmons says. In addition to this background running, he is preparing her for. the cross-country season coming up. There are several meets spon- sored by the AAU before the Na- tionals. "Francie is one of the best in the Midwest," he added proudly. Why does Francie run? "I enjoy it, I love to compete," she claims. "I used to be afraid of my own shadow, sort of an in- trovert. But now I think I'm somebody," she adds. "I love to meet people. Running has become an integral part of my personal- ity," Francie says with a smile. "I've been very busy lately but I still have some goals now," she says seriously. "I'd love to make the Pan-American team in 1967 and of course the Russian team in 1966. I know I must break 2:10 at least." Francie reflects on the question of women running in track: "Def initely, I think women shou run. They aren't competing again men, just themselves." Do the whistles and cries c astonishment bother her? "No, not at all. I love runnin GRID, SELECTIONS Everybody set for the first home game of the year? You all should be, especially you grid pickers. The atmosphere is marvelous. "I remember in Cleveland for the Knights of Columbus Meet they introduced the competitors with a spotlight. Nobody knew me but they all applauded and cheered. I felt very good about that. "Sure, I'd love to go to Mexico City in 1968 for the Olympics. But there is a lot of hard work ahead. I'm sure I must break 2:08 before I even have a chance," she re- flects. "Francie is self-motivating. No- body tells her to run-She's a wonderful kid," Coach Simmons reveals. He says that she is one of the three best 800 meter run- ners in the country now. So, the next time you see an attractive blond run in blue, whistle, hoot, yell or even sigh, but don't get in her way, she's got work to be done.
