Page Ten THE MICHIGAN DAILY Thursday, December 4, 1969 BIG TEN RUNNERUP NOT ENOUGH Wolverine tankers aim for second in nation By ROD ROBERTS Michigan's swimming team sur- prised nearly everyone at the F U K IS INCAA's last year by amassing 1641 pCAAts adcapturing fourth place, as it was virtually the same team that barely managed sixth place with 92 points the year before, the lowest Wolverine finish since 1956. This year's squad will have a strong nucleus with four tankers -Gary Kinkead, Juan Bello, Dick Rydze, and Bill Mahoney-who ac- counted for 102 points at the NCAA's. But more important, a strong and lengthy delegation of freshmen swimmers may give Michigan the opportunity to dis- place Stanford or Southern Cali- fornia as the number three or number two team in the nation. It is generally conceded that Indiana will win the national championship this year for the third straight time. Although the bb Hoosiers lost Charlie Hickcox, fre:hman Gary Hall could team up with Mark Spitz to give In- diana another new record in total team points at the NCAA's. In Coach Gus Stager's words, "Of the eigtheen swimmers that will go to the Big Tens this year, half of them could easily be fresh- men. Right now, only Kinkead, Bello, Mahoney, and Rydze seem assured of going." Seniors Kinkead and Bello are the most versatile members on the team, and Coach Stager will be able to place these two in the events that each meet's strategy dictates. Kinkead, who captains this year's squed, will concentrate his talents in the distance events, freestyle, and individualrmedley, and backstroke. Last year at the NCAA's, the Wolverine captain took second in the 500 IM, and third in the 200 yard backstroke. Bello 'is just as versatile as Kinkead, but he shows his super- iority in the shorter events. Last year at the NCAA's, Michigan's Olympic swimmer from Peru fin- ished runner-up in both the 200 yard freestyle and 200 yard in- dividual medley, and also holds the ConferencetChampionship mark in both events, with 1:42.08 and 1:56.6 respectively. I A - , THE 0 E AY TO STOP IR PR CY In signing this petition, we add our voices to those who demand that Syria release the two detained Israelis, illegally taken into custody in the h ing of a Trans World Airlines plane on August 29, 1969. We further protest that despite their failure to release these two passengers, Syria has elected to sit on the most politically powerful body of the United Nations, the Security Council. We call upon the Secretary General of the U Nations, U Thant, to exercise the impartiality that his high office demands, and to do his utmost not only in securing the release of the two Israe zens now being held in Damascus, but to work for legislation prohibiting the illegal seizure of planes, crews, and passengers involved in any f hijackings. To stop air piracy, we call upon the International Air Transport Association, International Civil Aviation Organization and Internat Federation of Airline Pilots' Associations to make clear that they no longer will fly to any nation that: 1. Refuses immediately to return a hijacked plane, its passengers or crew, or 2. Affords sanctuary to those responsible for the hijacking, or fails to prosecute or extradite them promptly. ijack- been nited li citi- uture fional Art Lavie Erha Lavie Michael Schneck Lin Kaatz Marilyn Koster Pam Dick Les Goldstein Ilan Ishai Uri Zamir Geri N.
