One of the demands made by black students who locked them- selves in the LSA Bldg.. then the Administration Bldg., on April 9, 1968 was a general request for more black professors. The controversy this term began when several black graduate stu- dents in an introductory graduate- level course started asking history professors about the lack of black faculty. Members of the Peace Corps are temporarily deferred.I "There has been much concern among our present workers as to whether their deferments will hold, despite the lottery," Buck said. "I have also heard that, dur- ing the past few weeks, people have been waiting to apply to see what their number would , be." Don Rotkin, SDS member, said last night. the draft lottery is ".irrelevant." "There should be no draft. Nix- on through the lottery, is merely trying to co-opt the people. Now one-third of the people -- those with the highest number -- are less angry than before. College people still get deferred and black people still get drafted. So it is still class-based," he said. Rotkin added he doubted that SDS would be effected at all by the lottery. He doesn't expect membership to decrease or opin- ions to change. Student react ions vari-d. Paul Freedman, '72, number 320, said. "Before I always had to worry about having enough money to stay in school and wondering if I'd have to drop out and get a job. Now if I get tired of school I can drop out for a while and take it easy." A student, who did not fare as well in the lottery had a different viewpoint.. Jim Colbert '71, number 100, said. "My situation Is different. I've been in school for five years, and I was notified a few weeks ago that I've been classified I-A, so 've got a bigger problem than being number 100." And Ernst Jacquet, '69 English, said. "I don't even know what my number is. I'm In Navy ROTC so unless I drop out, I'm not affect- ed at all." Randy Geidel, '72, number 253, said, "If I'd been drafted, I'd have left the country." "We asked a professor in this History 600 course if racism was involved, and he said historians have forgotten blacks for 3 0 0 years," said Lindsey, one of the participants in the meeting. Lindsey claimed that former de- partment chairman W. B. Willcox had said that black studies "were not worthy of academic pursuit." Lindsey also suggested that the history department has not tried hard enough to find and recruit black faculty.
