Tuesday. December 2. 1969 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Eleven cM cagers get by stubborn Titans, 85-75 Against 77wNk/al Danny Fife. *.. runnng awaytwith tt all By ERIC SIEGEL DANNY FIFE couldn't supress a smile as he laced up his shoes in the locker room after the Wolverines out-fought the University of Detroit Titans 85-75 in their season opener last night. "Once we started to run in the second half," the junior guard explained happily, "they just couldn't stay with us. "That's what we have to do to win," Fife continued. "Run, rebound, play defense and run some more." Michigan Coach Johnny Orr had been saying the same thing all through his team's fall practice, and he said it again last night. "We just did what we have to do," Orr stated simply. "We have to run to win, and when our fast break started to jell in the second half, we started to win" The Wolverines didn't actually put their fast break game together until 9:37 of the second was gone. By then, Detroit, fighting back from a halftime deficit of 40-33, moved ahead of the Maize and Blue, 56-55. But then Bill Fraumann picked off the rebound after De- troit's Eric Rucker missed a foul shot, and the Wolverines were off and running. FRAUMANN PASSEL) to Fife on the sidelines, and the hard-working junior drove all the way down the court for a lay-up that put the Wolverines out in front, 57-56. Fife was fouled on the play, and when he converted the free throw, it was 58-56 Michigan. That was to be the story for the rest of the night. When the Wolverines were running the Titans into the ground, Fife was out in front: and when he wasn't out in front, he was helping to clear the boards, or steal a pass, or get the ball out to Rodney Ford or Rick Bloodworth. Coach Orr said it all when he said, "Fife was great out there. He's a great player. He's not a great shooter but he's a real competitor.- Fife showed a little bit of that competitiveness a little later in the second half, when he drove half the length of the court, winding in and out of a web of red uniforms, to score another bucket to put the Wolverines ahead 61-59. Fife scored the game's next basket, too, on a short jumper that came after he stumbled and fell backwards about 10 feet from the basket. AT ''BIS POINT, Fife, perhaps sensing a chance for the Wolverines to break the game open, became a little too com- petitive. Trying to work around a pick set up by the Titans big (6-8, 223) center Al Peake, Fife picked up his fourth foul of the night. With a little over seven minutes remaining in a tight game, the obvious move for Coach Orr would have been to remove his junior guard. But Orr left him in, explaining later, "Fife begged me not to take him out of the game. He promised me he wouldn't get another foul." Not only did Fife keep his promise to Orr; he also continued to spairk the Wolverines' explosion. With 6:44 left in the game and the Wolverines holding a rather tenuous five point lead, Fife moved in to steal the ball from the Titans' 6-6 forward Charlie Owens. 1IFE STARTED and also finished the fast break himself this time, but his slot was blocked by Eric Rucker. However, center Bill Frauniani. following on the play, had an easy tap and the Wolverines inargin was now seven. Fife got the fast break started on the next play, too, pulling in a rebound-one of four in the night, all of them coming in the second half-and by the time the play was over, the Wol- verines had two more points on the scoreboard. In all, Fife started the fast break going four times in the next three minutes as the Wolverines put the game out of reach of the Titans. In addition to sparking the Wolverines fast break, Fife also collected 12 of his 16 points in the Wolverines touch and go second half. Still, despite the Wolverines' first victory and Fife's fine second-half effort. Fife as not entirely satisfied with his own or the team's performance. 'We all made too many mistakes, too many mental errors out there." Fife commented. "If we play like that Wednesday against Notre Dame, we're going to be in trouble. "But," Fife continued, "I dont think we'll keep on making those errors. Peake brought the Titans to within three by hitting a jumper, but Carter and Rod Ford each hit on a pair of free throws to give Michigan a 67-60 advantage. Chuck Owens cut the Wolverinel lead to five with a layup, but the Titans then missed two opportuni- ties to move closer when Owens missed a free throw and Rucker missed a layup on a quick break. The latter play resulted in a Michigan quick break and a Fraumann two pointer. R i c k Bloodworth then followed with two charity tosses to put Mich-I another story. With Russell lead- ing the way, the Titans went on a 15-6 scoring spree resulting in their only lead of the night, but then came the foul trouble for Russell, and Michigan pulled back out to its safe cushion. After the game, Orr expressed pleasure over Michigan's defensive effort and Fraumann's playing. The Michigan mentor said, "We're better defensively thisyear than last. We didn't let them get too many good shots, and we couldn't really do much about Russell. He really got hot. "Fraumann provided the spark we needed. He always hustles." Orr also added, 'We have a good group of kids this year - they really try."
