Wolverines

Following their tremendous up-
set victory over the Ohio State
Buckeyes, the Rose Bowl bound
Michigan Wolverines soared from
twelfth to seventh place in the
national collegate rankings, t h e
highest rating of the season for
the spoiling team. The 24-12 loss
collapsed the roof on the defend-
ing champion Bucks, and even
earned for the Wolverines a first
place ballot in the poll.
Texas' mighty Longhorns, mak-
ing a colossal gain without even
carrying the ball, stampeded into
the No. 1 spot among the nation's
college football powers.
The unbeaten Longhorns, w h o
marked time last Saturday while
Michigan scuttled Ohio State's
22-game wining streak, displaced
the Buckeyes atop The Associat-
ed Press weekly rankings in a
landslide coup.
Texas, 8-0 with two tough reg-
ular season games to play, corraled
33 of 38 first place votes cast by a
nationwide panel of sports writers
and sportscasters. Ohio State,
named No. 1 on 31 of 39 ballots a
week ago, did not receive a single
first place call this time and top-

pled to fourth place, behind No. 2
Arkansas and No. 3 Penn State.
The new leaders totaled 748
points, a margin of 145 over the
Razorbacks, who they'll meet in a
Dec. 6 showdown for the South-
west Conference title after t h e i r
traditional Thanksgiving Dasy
clash with Texas A&M.
Arkansas, also 8-0 and idle last
week, held a 30-point edge over
Orange Bowl-bound Penn State.
But the Nittany Lions picked up
three of the remaining five first-
place votes after lifting its record
9-0 by trimming Pitt 27-7.
Ohio State had 509 points, com-
pared with 736 last week.
Another first went to fifth-
ranked Southern California, 9-0-1,
following a 14-12 nod over UCLA.

Missouri, Penn State's Orange
Bowl foe, moved up one notch to
the No. 6 spot, while Notre Dame
held eighth, and Loisiana S t a t e
and Tennessee advanced one step
each to ninth and 10th.
Missouri, 9-1, trounced Kansas
69-21; Notre Dame, 8-1-1, topped
Air Force 13-6; LSU, 9-1, smack-
ed Tulane 27-0 and Tennessee, 8-
1, outscored Kentucky 31-26.
UCLA's loss to Southern Cal
drppped the Bruins from sixth to -
11th, but there was little signi-
ficant change in the remainder of
the Top Twenty, Auburn dropped
down one peg to 12th, Nebraska
went up three to 13th.
