Page Eight THE MICHIGAN DAILY Friday, November 21, 1969 LAST CONFERENCE GAME: I , Jim Mandich (EDITOR'S NOTE: The following article gives some of Captain Jim Mxanidich's thoughts about Satur- day's game with Ohio State and the season in general. They are taken from an interview by Daily reporter Robin Wright). By JIM MANDICH as told to Robin Wright I feel sort of meloncholy about it, my last game at Michigan. The greatest part of my life has been here and I hate to think it's finally coming to an end. There was one time I thought it could go on forever, and I'm sad in a way, but I'm looking forward to new things. I've ex- hausted almost everything there is to do in college and I'm look- ing forward to stepping out in the real world. I lump both these last t w o years together as being the most exciting period of my foot- ball career. Winning in itself is exciting. As far as personal per- formance, I would say that this year has been my most satisfy- ing year. I've been called upon to do more things and hopefully I have performed them to the best of my ability. I would say the biggest disap- pointment would be my entire sophomore year in that I had received much advanced notice. ALTHOUGH I FELT person- ally that I was playing at my best, many others were told to expect more out of me. Some felt I didn't live up to their standards and it had an effect on me. Of course it is a great honor to be mentioned as an All- American by anyone's standards. But I firmly believe that the important thing is to satisfy yourself first, and, secondly, to satisfy what is demanded of you by your coaches and players. To be able to look at your- self and say you have played an outstanding day, or outstanding year means far more than be- ing named Lineman of the Week or All-American for the season. I would say that Ohio State is always the big game of the year for myself and most of the players from Ohio. The people here emphasize the Michigan State game, be- cause it's their home state. But I love to play against Ohio State. IN FACT, I've played two of my best games against O h i o State the past two years. I just hope I can be that lucky in the big one this Saturday. I don't know if I'm speak- ing for the team, but I feel that the big prize of this year would be for us to knock off the Ohio State juggernaut - as I've heard it termed. They're undefeated, they're number one in the nation, and people are proclaiming t h e m possible one of the greatest teams of all time. This puts a little importance on the game. I think we have a b e t t e r chance of beating Ohio State than anyone on their schedule. We do not fear Ohio State. We're going to challenge them man-for-man and it'll just be a matter of the better team win- ning. There's really rather a simple formula for winning. Each in- dividual will just have to win his battle with the mantacross the line. If each man wins, then we'll defeat Ohio State. It's a t e a m game of course, but there's a series ofbattles going on out there. I think it's just going to take each player having t h e right mental attitude. I THINK, as the coach set out today, that the emphasis is not going to be on any player individual. It's a team game. We're going to attack the Ohio State defense by simple basic football - just blocking a n d tackling to try and open them up a little bit. Then it'll pro- bably become a more wide open game. No one individual will carry us speaks by Ohio State. It'll be a team win. The worse thing in the world would be for us to prepare for Ohio State differently than for any other team. We have no intention of do- ing it that way. We're just go- ing to challenge them man-for- man. We don't plan on doing any- thing special before the game. I'm sure we will have a pep talk as we have before key games in the past. But the incentives are here for this game and I may stress them. The incentives are our 50-14 drubbing last year, which no one will let us forget, and the Big Ten championship which we can win on Saturday. I CAN'T PREDICT the score. It's impossible. Both teams have shown in the past that they have highly explosive offenses and the statistics will bear out that both tepms have yielded fewer points than any team in the Big Ten. It'll be a matter of whether the defenses or offenses are stronger. Personally, being an offensive player, I tend to be- lieve that it's not going to be a tremendously high scoring game, but I think the winning team is going to need five touch- downs. I would say that on offense there is just one man we have to stop and that's Rex Kern. He's an outstanding football player, Defensively, I think the thing we have to do more than any- thing else is just sustain them and give that little bit of se- cond effort, Our defense is really strong. Their offensive team is very strong also. It's just impossible to say. THIS YEAR'S GAME against Ohio State is so much the same as last year's; I'm very thank- ful that we have this second chance to face them. I can't say any more. We're just for- tunate enough to be back where we are - in a position to knock them off. I would be the last to deny that the Rose Bowl hasn't been on our minds. I don't like to think of going to the Rose Bowl having lost to Ohio State. But I suppose we do have to look at it as a realis- on Ohio State J imll, n !Iis hdrags some -Daily-Eric Pergeaux extra baggage into endzone -Daily-Jim Diehi Jim Mandich snags an easy one FOR UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF H L SE BOW uper TOUR C HAMPAGNE PARTY JET FANTASTIC DAYS IN HOLLYWOOD" DEPARTS DEC. 28 7 R ETUR NS JAN. 3 0 COMPLETE PRICE 30 $225 Plus $10 Tax & Services Round Trip from Detroit Still Available ROUND TRIP JET ONLY tic possibility. I would say that we would definitely deserve to go because in the head-to-head confrontation we obliterated Purdue, and any other compara- tive scores are worthless. Many people are looking at how Purdue did againstaStan- ford and how they did against Notre Dame but I don't think that figures into it at all. I think that when we met Purdue we were the better football team. Beating Ohio State is import- ant to the Rose Bowl, particu- larly in terms of the team's morale. There's a good deal of pride involved. It's a great honor to go to the Rose Bowl, but the big prize is to go after win- ning the Big Ten champion- ship. I THINK allowing the 2 n d place team to go to another bowl is a very realistic idea. It seems so many other conferences send many teams to bowl games, ,,. The Rose Bowl is the great- est pageant in football, but it's a great honor to go to any bowl and I think that I would prefer that change in the rules, that being of course after this year. I know very little a b o u t either of the possible opponents in the Rose Bowl. However I do know that I believe than on any given day, the Michigan team I'm playing now is capable of knocking off anyone in the country. Reynolds says bowl vote in DETROIT (A) - Michigan has already been selected to represent the Big Ten in the Rose B o w 1, according to a Detroit sportscast- er who says his information will be denied vigorously by the league office. Bob Reynolds, sports director of radio station WJR, said the action "was taken the first of the week. "So regardless of what happens Saturday in Ann Arbor," when Michigan meets Ohio State "the roses belong to the Wolverines. "It would take a debacle of gi- gantic proportions Saturday to make and change at this late date," he said. Only Michigan and Purdue are in the running for the Rose Bowl bid. Ohio State is not eligible to make the trip, since it went to the west coast for the football game last year. Michigan hasa 5-1 Big T e n record going into Saturday's game. Purdue has a 4-2 conference re- cord and closes out its season against Indiana Saturday. Reynolds refused to disclose the source of his information. Less than a year ago, Reynolds broke the information that form- er Green Bay Packer general man- ager Vince Lombardi would re- sign and join the Washington Redskins as head coach. Lombardi made the move shortly after. Reynolds said he is as sure of his inside information on t he Rose Bowl as he was about t h e Lombardi switch. tfout Fuwptt Awadt" tke Test.*w I &~DJ 2 GRE f Q Z7C LLSAT MCAT L~2JU I DAT ATGSB * Preparation for tests required for admission to post-graduate schools * Six and twelve session courses Small groups " Voluminous study material for home study prepared by ex- perts in each field " Lesson schedule can be tai- lored to meet individual needs.
