Page Eight THE MICHIGAN DAILY r Tuesdoy, November 18, 1969 . BOWL PREVIEWS: Notre 1 SOUTH BEND, Ind. ()-Notre1 Dame Coach Ara Parseghian said yesterday he was "tickled to 1 death" to go to the Cotton Bowli and was elated that the university; now has set a precedent for bowl bids in the future. Notre Dame reversed its policy i against post-season football andc accepted the Cotton Bowl invita- tion to meet either Texas, cur- rently rated No. 2, or Arkansas, No. 4, in the New Year's Day classic in Dallas. Texas plays at Arkansas Dec. 6, the winner getting the Cottoni Bowl spot as Southwest Confer-' ence champion. Field Scovell, chairman of theI Cotton Bowl selection committee who made the formal invitation in person before going with Par- seghian to attend the Chicago To- day Quarterback Club luncheon in Chicago, said Notre Dame's pro- ceeds from the game should come close to $350,000. He said the split last year, when Tennessee played Texas, was a record $342,000 per team. Notre Dame can keep its entire share since it is an independent and thus has no split of the re- ceipts with a conference. The last bowl trip for Notre Dame was in 1925 when Knute Rockne and the fabled Four Horsemen defeated Stanford and Ernie Nevers in the Rose Bowl 27-10. Rockne and his team consumed nearly a month in a leisurely train, trip to and from Pasadena, and the absence of students from classes irritated the university's' heirarchy. The ban was clamped on then and lasted until now. _jiCiting reasons for changing the )ame a policy, the Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, executive vice president of Notre Dame and chairman of the Fac- ulty Board in Control of Athletics, said: "The crucial consideration was the urgent need of the university for funds to finance minority stu- dent academic programs and scholarships, and Notre Dame's share of the proceeds will be dedi- cated to his pressing need." "I've waited 20 years to go to a bowl game so this is quite a day for me," Parseghian said in Chicago. "I think a precedent now has been set and if we have good ranking and receive bids we can go to a bowl game every year. * * * Orange . bowl MIAMI (AP) - Unbeaten P e n n State, which throws the football only in emergencies, will f a c e Missouri and record-smashing passer Terry McMillan in t h e Orange Bowl game the night of Jan. 1, it was officially announc- ed yesterday. Penn State is the defending Orange Bowl champion. Coach Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions slip- ped past Kansas 15-14 last New Year's. night and have now gone 27 games without a loss. T h e powerful independent is 8-0 with games remaining against Pitts- burgh and North Carolina State. Missouri, 8-1 with suddenly- weak Kansas on tap Saturday, haE cepts C one of the great success stories in the 187-pound McMillan. A third-string quarterback while at Coral Gables High School in the suburbs of Miami, McMillan has cracked most of the passing records of Paul Christman since rising to fame with the Tigers of 1 coach Dan Devine. While McMillan loves the air game, Penn State's quarterback, Chuck Burkhart, leaves most of the work to a set of brilliant run- ners. The senior f r o m McKees Rocks, Pa., has not thrown a touchdown pass and has hit 38 in just 80 attempts for 525 yards. * * * otton Bowl bid Carolina accepted an invitation practice and won shouted approv- yesterday to play in the second al for acceptance. Missouri is scheduled to play unbeaten Penn State in the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day. The events of the past weekend have rather shattered my il- lusions about this country. I refer of course to the dastardly ruination of the entire police movement by the Weathermen and Yippies (Jew- ish hippies) after their henious disruption of your beautiful Nations Capitol. To make myself perfectly clear, let me say that as a foreigner Ury your land I was not expecting to see that you were perfect. Indeed if you will cast your minds back to the 1776 world series for a moment you will see that a small disruptive minority of effete intellectual snobs can take over an entire country. I must say that even with my immature knowledge of foot- ball I was impressed by the blocking and running of the Metropolitan Police. Their staunch attack in the first quarter was so good that one was almost ready to believe that 'Fat Boy' Hayes was masterminding the entire operation. The Weathermen temporarily overcome by what seemed to be an American version of London Fog, fell back in some dissarray and kicked a safety. They soon recovered however and a group of them made a really fantastic 678 yard run down Connecticut avenue from Du- pont, which threw the Police offense temporarily off guard. There was a quick recovery by the police and for a time it seemed as if they would be playing the third string National Guardsmen. A call of illegal substitution prevented them from making this move as the N. G. had not yet been made special constables. This quick action by the referees (New Mobe Legal Aides), prevented the police from taking advantage of their positions during the remains of the third quarter. The final moments of the game were confused, and those of us in the press box were attacked by the police, preventing any ob- jective reporting of what followed. Anyway, there are two sets of GRIDDE PICKS this week: RYM II vs. United Airlines counter hijacking security.
