M. . ichiga By ROD ROBERT Matt Mann Pool will be open- ing its doors a little early this year to the action and excite- ment of water sports. But it isn't because of swimming. Michigan will host the Mid- west Collegiate Water Polo Tournament today and tomor- row, with the winner getting an invitation to play in the NCAA Championships at Long Beach next weekend. Perhaps one of the most rug- ged of all sports, water p o 1o combines "the finesse of bas- ketball. the ruggedness of foot- ball, the demanding condition- ing of swimming and track, and the theatrics of wrestling." The six top teams in the Mid- west-Indiana, Loyola, Illinois- Chicago Circle, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Michigan will vie for the championship. The Wolverines meet Illinois at 6 p.m. before tackling Loyola in a crucial game at 9 p.m. ,oyola and Indiana, who have split two games this year, rate as co-favorites in the tourney. Last year the Hoosiers sunk the nal Day for ordering Ramblers from Chicago 13-8 to take the first Midwest Water Polo Championship while Mich- igan finished in fourth place. Loyola will be led by an AAU All-American while two Olym- pic swimmers - Charlie Hick- cox and Gary Hall - will play for Indiana. Michigan Swimming Coach Gus Stager is cautious in rat- ing of his team's chances. "I'll be happy if we get third place. We should be able to take Mich- igan State and Illinois, but af- ter that it will be tough. I know our players would really like to beat Ohio State, but we have lost to them this year.- Stager has enlisted the ser- vices of senior John Pheney, an AAU water polo veteran, to coach the Michigan squad, and he seems a bit more optimistic. "We have a good chance to beat Loyola this weekend. We only lost to them by one point when we went to Chicago last week, and I think we scared them a little when they saw us destroy Drake 16-2." Pheney's optimism is based on the fact that the 11-10 loss was due to a penalty shot in the last two minutes of play. The game was quite a change from 25-9. and 18-9 plasterings that the Wolverines got from the Ram- blers earlier in the season. Wolverine chances for a tournament victory this weekend depend upon their match at 9 tonight against the Ramblers at Matt Mann Pool. ertheless. water polo is a rec- ognized varsity sport at Loyola, and a few of.the Ramblers have played together for as long as seven years. Freshman Steve McCarthy. who is high scorer with 31 goals, thinks the team has improved in the course of the year simply because of "experience." He ex- plained, "We're in a lot better condition now and know how to swim for open water. Before we used to get in each other's way on offense in front of the op- ponent's goal." McCarthy credits much of the Michigan's defensive strength to the goalie, Jim Pidgon. "He's really come a 1 o n g way, and might be the best goalie of all the team's here this weekend.'' Bob Zann and Gary Kinkead also help to stiffen the Wolver- ine defense, while Rory Moore and Greg Zann have added to scoring punch this season with 30 and 26 goals respectively. Greg Zann based the teams hopes on the recent perform- ance at Loyola, stating "Al- though we were down at half 8-2, we knew we could b e a t them. In t h e fourth quarter. Michigan was ahead 10-9, and if it wasn't for a penalty shot in the 1 a s t two minutes, we wouldn't have lost." The tournament starts at 2 p.m. this afternoon w it h six matches scheduled through the day. Semi-finals will be held to- morrow morning and the cham- pionship game will be at 3:00 in the afternoon. -_______ -~- _-__-~-~- II The Happening IS Now... The Ed.
