Like turning 21, li~ga sophomore only happens Of.3and there's no reason not to t ake~ advantage of it--which is p!recisely what the cast of Half a :sixpence has cone. The musical isl is pure fluff, hardly worth ar moment's notice, but it is wtell-suited to the ene-rgetic production one expects of Soph Show: it's what' s known as a vehicle. and it served its puirpose well. Joni- 'o.s and the like wvill be sen in:, up bits of enthusiasm from all over, Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre well in.to nlext week. Some of it peeled of the sop)h- ornores on stage, and a good deal of it peeled off those in the au- dience---who gave the cast a standing ovation last night. The production had its prob- lems, but they were not serious. Slow light cues had the same ir- ritating effect as comnmercials at crucial moments during movies shown on TV. And the srgl for appropriate upper-c 1 a ss a nci working- class-F English dia - lects made it imphossible to for- get-or a moment that the pro- duction was an amuateur one. But the word "amateur" is not wholly negative: as an "amo amas amat" it has something to do wvith labors of love, and that's where Soph Show mayv be anl improvement on the musical it- self. If the saccarine tale of Arthurim Kipps and the rise and talof his fortunes (romantic and financial) is barely likeable, the flash bang wallop produc- i:on it is presently receiving at the hands. of last year's freshi- m!en is pretty lovable. WV e ri d y Shankin's- choreo- graphy in the four big niiumrbers that fill the whole(sa, ede- serves perhaps thelags share of the credit.
