The Sugar Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Orange Bowl, and Rose Bowl are still anybody's game, but half the Tangerine Bowl cast has been determined. Toledo, in clinching t h e Mid-American Conference title 1 a s t weekend also has won the trip to Or- lando, Florida. Upsets took over in the South this week as two of the prev- iously undefeated members of the Southeastern Conference fell for the first time. LSU was brought down to earth by Mis- sissippi and Florida was topped for the first time by Auburn. ARCHIE MANNING had an- other great week for Mississip- pi in their 26-23 victory over the Tigers of LSU. Manning hit on 23 passes for 210 yards and scored three touchdowns for the Rebels, now 4-3. Florida'sv'superb quarterback John Reaves was mastered by the Auburn defense which set a SEC record, picking off sevenf of Reaves' passes. Auburn's Ti- gers rolled up a 26-0 halftime lead and the Gators were never close, losing 36-12. The Volunteers of Tennessee now remain the only undefeated team in the SEC as a result of their 17-3 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. Led by a ten- acious defense and t h e° hard running of fullback Curt Wat- son the Vols powered to their sixth victory without a defeat. TENNESSEE NOW holds a full game leadover the once- beaten Gators and LSU Tigers. Auburn's Tigers, Georgia, Mis- sissippi, and Alabama all have 2-2 records and are out of con- tention for the SEC crown, but not for possible post-season appearances. Out in the vastness of t h e Great Plains the cries of upset from Big Eight football squads is heard again. Alone at the top for one week, Kansas State was Oklahoma remains in conten- tion with a 2-1 record. THE MISSOURI - KANSAS STATE game was a battle of explosive offenses, w I t h Mis- souri's Tigers eventually down- ing the Wildcats 41-38. Kansas State's Lynn Dickey put on an- other exceptional performance in the losing cause. Dickeyscompleted 26 passes a n d gained 421 yards in total offense and broke some more Big Eight records, including the career marks for most comple- tions and passing yardage. Nothing changed on the west coast where USC and UCLA re- main as the only two undefeat- ed teams. In the Pacific Eight the once-tied Uclans rolled ov- er winless Washington 57-14 while Southern Cal had to score in the last minute to edge California 14-9. The Pacific- Eight representative to the Rose Bowl will more than like- ly be determined by the win- ner of the USC-UCLA tilt the last week of the season. IN THE IVY LEAGUE no one has to worry about bowl games. T h e prestige of a conference championship is the goal Ivy League teams shoot for a n d this year's title will probably be determined by t h e Princeton- Dartmouth game. Dartmouth rolled to its fourth league vic- tory in bumping Yale from the Ivy League summit 42-21. The high-scoring battle was high- lighted by the passing of Dart- mouth's John Chasey. Prince- ton kept apace of Dartmouth by rolling past Brown 33-6. Ellis Moore led the Tigers with three touchdown runs. So this Saturday while ev- eryone else gets back into ac- tion battling for bowl bids only Toledo gets to play complac- ently already sure of their post- season excursion. -Assocated Press NOTRE DAME halfback Dennis Allen (22) looses the ball in Saturday's clash with Navy. Middle Steve Dmetruk, who caused the fumble, recovered the ball, but to no avail as the Irish gained their 5th victory of the season, dealing Navy a 54-0 drubbing.
