I I! i i Blood, Sweat and Tears: A good thing gone bad'li f University of Michigan School of Music Presents 1969-1970 FESTIVAL OF By BERT STRATTON At long last, the Blood, Sweat, and Tears college-touring group finally played the Events Build- ing last night, and they left about $11,000 richer. BS&T gets that much money for one concert not because they're such good musicians (which is partially true on an individual basis), but because they are damn good business- men. They know how to sell them- selves, and they also know how to manipulate the massive aud- iences which they always seem to attract. BS&T plays by all the promotional rules of which rule number one is that the typical rock fan goes to a live concert to see their favorite act, not to hear them. What they gave the audience last night was a live enactment of their second album plus a few updated riffs and lead-ins, which was just what the crowd want- ted to "see." To work night af- ter night within their h i g h 1 y structured arrangements, must be quite a grind on the talented members of BS&T, but the mighty dollars has been known to stifle the creativity of many performers more talented than they. However, it's not fair to group the entire Blood, Sweat, and Tears nonet into the category of mediocre - because there's two exceptions -- Fred Lipsius, who plays alto sax and piano, and Steve Katz, who plays lead guitar, harmonica, and d oe s --~-ai~y-TomasP. opi some vocals.
