This was a big week for big sur- prises, especially in the Big Eight where upsets were the rule in- stead of the exception. Perennial powers Missouri a n d Oklahoma were both upset by perennial doormats Colorado a n d Kansas State. The Wildcats of Kansas State, who have never attended a bowl game in the school's history are now the sole leaders in the Big Eight and the favorites to move on to the Orange Bowl. Iowa coach Ray Nagel had to watch his star quarterback Larry Lawrence be helped off the field twice Saturday in the game against Michigan State, the last time with only 1:57 left in the game and the ball resting 33 yards from the tying touchdown. Senior Mike Cilek was inserted at the helm and promptly covered the distance with two bulletlike passes. The second completion, good for 11 yards and a touch- down, was to Kerry Reardon and came with only 1:25 remaining. The margin of victory ingthe Hawkeyes 19-18 win was provided by Alan Schulette's PAT. Schnlette also had two field goals and Lawr- ence passed to Don Osby for the other Iowa points. One of the two Michigan State scores was on a 63-yard aerial from Bill Triplett to Steve Kough. Another Triplett to Kough bomb, good for 38 yards and a touch- down, was called back because of an ineligible receiver downfield in a play heatedly disputed by Duffy Daugherty.
