Sa. 9-2, Sales only SWEDEN My Lord! Is this really FLUSHING, NEW YORK - The beleaguered Baltimore Orioles might mend their crass bourgeois ways today and call a peace moratorium of their own. They suffered the consequences of showing up yesterday and were exterminated by the "amazin" New York Mets, 2-1. The wrath of Ho most certainly was in evidence in the 10th inning when relief pitcher Pete Richert's throw to first hit pinch- hitter J. C. Martin allowing the winning run to score and moved the Mets to within one victory of their first world championship. Tom Seaver, the majors' top winner during the regular sea- son with 25 victories, won.his first Series game with a six-hitter to get revenge for his opening game defeat by Mike Cuellar. Cuellar had long since departed when the Mets finally pull- ed it out in the 10th on a combination of Jerry Grote's sun- struck double, an intentional walk to Al Weis and Richert's er- ror on Martin's bunt. The Mets took a 1-0 lead into the ninth on Donn Clenden- on's second-inning home run but the Orioles struck back to tie in the ninth on singles by Frank Robinson and Boog Powell and Brooks Robinson's sacrifice fly on which Ron Swoboda made a diving catch. Dick Hall took over for Eddie Watt, the second Oriole's pitcher, at the start of the Mets' 10th and went to 3-2 count on Grote before the catcher hit a fly ball to short left. Don Buford apparently lost the ball in the sun and it fell just beyond the grasp of shortstop Mark Belanger for a two-base hit. The strategy of Baltimore's fill-in manager, Billy Hunter,' who replaced Earl Weaver when the latter was chased by um- pire Shag Crawford in the third inning, called for an intentional walk to Weis. ap enin'? George Bamberger, the Orioles' pitching coach, came out to talk to Hall and then motioned fcr Richert to take over when he saw Martin, a lefthanded batter, come out on deck to hit for Seaver. Martin squared away on Richert's fi, st pitch and bunted the ball in front of the plate. Richert fielded the ball and threw to- ward first, but the ball hit the runner and rolled away into the hole toward second base. Pinch-runner Rod Gaspar, running for Grote, scored all the way from second base while the joyful Martin hopped up and down on the base paths between first and second. "I yelled all the way to let me get it," said catcher Elrod Hendricks. "I just went in and made the play," said Richert. Richert's throw hit Martin on the left wrist and rolled away between first and second as Rod Gaspar sped home. "The pitch was in on me," said Martin. "I tried to bunt it down toward first to keep it away from Brooks Robinson. I don't even know who threw the ball but he made a good play because the ball had backspin. I knew they had no play on the bases so my job was to get to first. The ball hit me on the left wrist." Cleon Jones made a fine catch on Dave Johnson in the fifth and Clendenon came up with ahard shot by Don B'uford in the third and turned it into a force play that helped Seaver out of a big jam. With a 3-1 edge in games, the Mets now have a chance to close out the Series at Shea Stadium in the fifth game today. It will be Jerry Koosman, Sunday's winner, against Baltimore's Dave McNally. -Associated Press ELROD HENDRICKS, Baltimore catcher, slides hard and high into Met second-baseman Al Weis to slow Weis' relay to first, allowing Dave Johnson to reach base ahead of the throw. The action came in the second inning of yesterday's 2-1 extra-inning New York triumph. BALTIMORE CONTROVERSY '69 PRESENTS CHARLES EVERS Mayor of a Bankrupt City When Charles Evers took offict as Mayor of Fayette, Miss., last spring, he discovered that the outgoing administration had drained the city treasury. At the moment, Evers, the first black man to be elected to the mayoralty of a racially mixed Southern city since the 1870's, is unable to meet his weekly payroll. This is only one of the problems this dynamic man has encountered since he moved into office. This Sunday at Hill Aud. the brother of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, will elaborate on his confrontation with the Mississippi power structure. SUNDAY, OCT. 12, 2 P.M., Hill Aud.
