RECORDING, TRANSCRIPTION, AND PREPARATION of conferences and proceedings. DENVER, Colo. (P) - Don January, a veteran Dallas pro, broke an 11-year playoff jinx with a dazzling putting exhibition yes- terday and beat fellow Texan Don Massengale by two strokes in their head-to-head duel for the 49th PGA Golf Championship. January shot a three-under-par 69, Massengale 71. They had leaped over the heads of some of the game's leading stars, including Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, Sunday to tie for the crown at 281. Spraying his shots through the early holes hacking from rough to sand bunkers but staying al- ive with some magnificent put- ting, the 37-year-old January fell two strokes behind through the first five holes.a Orioles Win Fame Game Over Reds COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (R) - Marcelino Lopez and Stu Miller combined to pitch a three-hitter while Paul Blair and Andy Etch- ebarren stroked home runs yes- terday, propelling the Baltimore Orioles to a 3-0 victory over Cin- cinnati in the annual Hall of Fame Game that was halted by rain after eight innings. Blair and Etchebarren both homered off losing pitcher Billy McCool, who was testing his arm for the first time since coming off Cincinnati's disabled list. The left-hander worked five innings, gave up two other hits besides the home runs, walked six and struck out six. Lopez, still on Baltimore's dis- abled list but now elegible to be reactivated, was credited with the victory at Doubleday Field, the spot where Gen. Abner Doubleday is credited with founding the game. Lopez pitched a two-hit ball through the first four innings, walking four and striking out two. Miller came in the fifth and al- lowed only one hit the rest of the way. The Reds got only one runner as far asthird baseibefore the game was halted by rain. Blair's homer came with two out in the first inning and Etche- barren connected an inning la- ter after Sam Bowens had walked with one out. But he rallied to even the duel at the,par five eighth and he ran in a 30-foot putt from the fringe to go ahead-to-stay-at the 199- yard, lake hole 10th. It seemed to set him off. He rolled in a tricky _12-footer on top of Massengale's 20-foot birdie putt as the 550-yard 12th hole and matched his rival with another birdie putt at the 14th The back-breaker for the 30- year-old Massengale, from Fort Worth, came at the 15th where January, after: tremendous drive of around 300 yards, rifled a wedge to within, three feet for his fifth birdie of the day. The two parred the short 16th, of bogeys on the 17th and then scrambled for their pars on the final hole. It was the first major golf vic- tory for January, who was beaten in a playoff for the PGA title by Jerry Barber at Chicago in 1961 and who lost his only other two playoff chances - the Western Open to Mike Fetchick in 1956 and the Lucky International to Chi Chi Rodriguez in 1964. A crowd of 7,500-anti-climactic for a record 74,500 for the four days of regular tournament play- watched the duel over the 7,436- yard, par 72 Columbine Course which surprisingly baffled the nation's finest pros. It was a dull, sluggish battle at first-in ideal playing conditions under sunny skies and with no wind-but suddenly exploded into high excitement when birdies ae- gan falling for both. Each had eight one putt greens and January sank putts of 35, 15, and two of 12 feet. Massengale's longest'putt was a 20-footer on the 12th for a birdie. January drove into the rough five times and Massengale found himself in the high spinach eight times. January caught three traps on the front nine and another at the 11th, but steadied with his iron play after that. Massengale visited only one trap. With pressure heavy, both, play- ers scrambled on the final two holes. At the 18th January, after a good drive, sent his second over the green where he had a free drop from an unplayable area but he chipped to within, four feet for his par. Massengale drove into the left rough, his second hit a cameraman and dropped near a tree but he put a wedge to within three feet for a closing par. One of the most dramatic holes was the 55-yard 12th. There Mas- sengale pushed his drive almost out of bounds, 50 yards into the deep rough. He tried to knock out with a six-iron but cut the ball and sent it into a car track. An official ruling permitted him to use another ball. He chopped the ball to the green and then sank a 20-foot putt for his bird. January, twice in the rough on the. hole, knocked a 12-foot putt for a matching birdie. 0V 4 00 Major League Standings I AMERICAN LEAGUE Chicago Boston California Detroit Minnesota Washington Cleveland Baltimore New York Kansas City W L Pct. 53 40 .570 52 40 .565 53 44 .546 50 43. .538 49 43 .533 46 50 .479 44 51 .457 43 51 .457 40 53 .430 40 55 .421 GB 3 32 8j 10 10% 13 14 NATIONAL LEAGUE W L Pct, GB Chicago 56 40" .584 - St. Louis 56 40 .584 - Cincinnati 52 45 .536 52 Atlanta 49 43 .533 6 Sant Francisco 50 47 .515 7 z x-Pittsburgh 47 45 .511 8 Philadelphia 45 47 .490 10 x-Los Angeles 40 53 .430 15 New York 38 54 .413 17 Houston 39 58 .400 17 YESTERDAY'S RESULTS' Houston 2, Philadelphia 1 (11 inn) Chicago 3, St. Louis 1 Pittsburgh at Los Angeles (inc) Only games scheduled TODAY'S GAMES New York at San Francisco (n) Cincinnati at Atlanta (n)) Chicago at St. Louis (n) Philadelphia at Houston (n) Pittsburgh at Los Angeles (n) '53 MG TD.
