Washington Chuvalo Out By Frazier TKO in 4th NEW YORK (AP)-Unbeaten Joe Frazier stopped iron-jawed George Chuvalo for the first time in his 63-bout career on a technical knockout in 16 seconds of the fourth round on a scheduled 12- round heavyweight fight last night at Madison Square Garden. Frazier, the 1964 Olympic champ who is rated No. 2 among the con- tenders for- the title the boxing commissions took away from Mu- hammed Ali, turned Chuvalo's face into a bloody pulp. Chuvalo, unable to see out of his battered eyes and with blood streaming down his cheeks, re- fused to go down in the contest. Obviously unable to defend him- self as he stood against the ropes near his own corner early in the fourth, Chuvalo calmly accepted the decision of referee Johnny Colon to stop the uneven contest. Frazier was giving away 12%/ pounds to his 29-year old foe, who had gone the route with such ex- perienced boxers as Ali and Floyd Patterson. But Joe climbed all over the Canadian champion from To- ronto and subjected him to steady punishment. The big crowd cheered for Chu- valo, a longshot underdog at odds than ran from 3 to 1 to 4 to 1, when he made his one last ditch stand early in the third. Frazier had opened a gash under Chu- valo's right eye as early as the' second round. In fact, there were marks around both of George's eyes after the first. 'Dr. Edwin Campbell, the New York State Athletic Commission physician, checked Chuvalo after the third but let it continue. I Chuvalo seemed to acknowledges the end by himself as he stood] helpless after 16 rounds of the next round. It was only the 17th pro fight for the 23-year-old Frazier and only two have gone the route. Al- though he passed up the World Boxing Association's eight-man elimination tournament, he ob- viously is a man to be reckoned with before any new champ is crowned. Frazier, 204%, set a fast pace for the lumbering Chuvalo, 217%, who was unable to cope with the speed and steady punching of the men who has been called the modern day version of a big Hen- ry Armstrong. Frazier's quick hook landed again and again on Chuvalo's face' and also again and again in low' territory. Both fighters were warn- ed byrreferee Colon in the second round in the contest that Was marred by a steady stream of low blows. Paul Casanova singled home his second run of the game in the ninth inning, breaking a tie and sparking the Washington Sen- ators to a 4-2 victory over Detroit last night. Ken McMullen opened the ninth against Fred Gladding with a single and Fred Valentine beat out a hit with two out before Casa- nova delivered. Valentine 'scored on the play when outfielder Mic- key Stanley threw wild to the plate. Detroit tied the game in the eighth when it loaded the bases on singles by Lennie Green and Dick McAuliffe and an intentional pass to Bill Freehan with two out. Jim Northrup hit an infield single, scoring Green but Bernie Allen's throw to McMullen at third nipped McAuliffe rounding the bag for the final out. Relief pitcher Gerry Arrigo walked in a run in the 12th inning giving the St. Louis Cardinals a 3-2 victory over Cincinnati' which kept them alone in first place in the National League. The victory lifted the Cardinals one game ahead of he Chicago Cubs who had won a day game from Atlanta and cut the margin to one-half game. Mike Shannon opened the 12th with a single off Arrigo, who entered the game in the 11th. -Associated Press CHICAGO CUBS SHORTSTOP Don Kessinger watches as sliding Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves is tagged out by second baseman Glenn Beckert folowing Aaron's single in the first inning. Cubs won 7-2. Detroit Tigers Lose Again-4-2; Cubs, Cards Both Win inN 9 f -I 4 Julian Javier then walked. Arri- go then struck out Dal Maxvill and got pinch hitter Ed Spiezio to pop up before walking Lou Brock and Bob Tolan to force home the run. Jack Lamabe got the Reds out in the 12th to preserve the victo- ry, his first in six decision. The Kansas City Athletics broke loose for five runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by Oz- zie Charria's bases-loaded, two- run single to hand Minnesota its third setraight loss, 9-6.
