Lawn t ennis Group Still Blans Pros MONTDORF-LES-BAINS, Lux- embourg ()-Tennis officials from some 35 countries, led by a No, No chorus from the Communist bloc, slammed the door Wednesday on Britain's plan for open tourna- ments. By 139 votes to 83, the annual meeting of the International Lawn Tennis Federation ILTF) decided against letting professional play in the World's big events-even for an experimental period. Britain, seconded by Australia, had proposed open tennis for two years. The motion required a two- thirds majority. Bob Kelleher, president of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association who went to the meeting with an open mind, finally sided with Britain and threw in his country's 12 votes in support of open tournaments. At least 10 countries voted in favor. But they failed to convert the smaller nations, who feared their players might be eased out by the professionals. They also feared that open tour- naments might upset plans to have tennis included in the Olympic Games. British tennis' officials for the past several years have been eager to open up Wimbledon to the pros -making it truly the world's championship - but never have been able to swing enough of 'the smaller nations. ME W141 uiem ener aostanng. Ali, sitting calmly and seriously before the commission, had no im- mediate comment, except to say he would not try to hold the fight outside California. Ali was stripped of his title by the World Boxing Association and the powerful New York State Athletic Commission after he was convicted in a federal court in Houston, on a charge of refusing to be drafted into the armed forces. He faces a five-year prison sen- tence if his appeal of the con- viction is upheld. California's boxing rules deny any fighter a license if he has been convicted of a felony and even if he is out op bond pending an appeal. Ali refused to be inducted, con- tending he is a Muslim minister and objects to fighting on relig- ious grounds. Oakland boxing promoter Hen- ry Winston said he had hoped to stage the fight in the Oakland Coliseum. Ali said he would pledge all his proceeds, except for $100, to a charitable organization buy food for hungry children in Mis- sissippi, Alabama and Geogia. The California commission re- jected a proposal recently to go along with WBA in refusing to recognize Ali as title holder. Ali named as potentian oppo- nents Floyd Patterson, whom he destoyed twice, and Sonny Lis- ton, from whom he took the title and "I guess I'll have to just issue an open challenge." At the same meeting, the com- misison deferred action on the license application of Liston. Commissioners said they want- ed to check Liston's status with the New York commission before deciding. Liston, 35, was denied on grounds of unsavory associa- tion by. his managers and handlers. -0 * * * ST. LOUIS (P)-Mike Shannon smashed a two-run homer off re- liever Pete Mikkelsen in the eighth inning last night, propelling St. Louis to a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The victory upped the Cardi- nals' National League lead to four games over the Chicago Cubs, who were idle. St. Louis starter Dick Hughes was working on a three-hitter and protecting a 2-0 lead in the eighth inning when Donn Clen- denon singled and Gene Alley cracked a two-run homer, tying the score. Jerry May followed with a tri- ple and pinch hitter Manny Mota hit a sacrifice fly, giving the Pirates the lead. Orlando Cepeda opened the Car- dinals' eighth with a single, knocking out Pirate starter Steve . 1 I Ii l Major League Standings I AMERICAN LEAGUE W L Pet.
