PAUL-MINNEAPOLIS (R) ; -Minnesota Twins President Cal- vin Griffith fired Sam 'Mele as his club's manager late yesterday and a short time later named Cal Ermer as the successor. Ermer, 42, takes over the Twins after 2'/2 seasons as manager of the Twins' Triple-A farm team at Denver in the Pacific Coast League. In naming Ermer, Griffith by- passed peppery Twins coach Billy Martin, regarded by many as Mele's eventual successor since he was hired as a coach before the 1965 season. Eleven members of the Twins squad have played under Ermer, including sluggers Harmon Kille- brew and Bob Allison, who played in 1957 at Chattanooga, where Ermer was managing. Griffith said he "just felt a change would be in the best in- terest of the ball club." "Sam did a good job for us," Griffith added. "Mele in the past has done a terrific job for us. But I thought there had been an ac- cumulation of certain things. I' thought there were things that should have been done that weren't done. "I'm not going to criticize Sam Mele. He's done a great job, and I'd be willing to give him another job. He cannot catch on with any other club this year." Griffith also indicated the fact Mele had signed a two-year con- tract after the Twins' pennant winning year of 1967 also had a bearing on a decision not to fire Mele last year. "I've instructed my junior ex- ecutives," Griffith said, "that one- year contracts should suffice for any manager or coach in the fu- ture." Netters Send Four to NCAA Michigan is sending four play- ers to the NCAA Tennis Cham- pionships at Southern Illinois Uni- versity in Carbondale, Ill. The top four players of this year's squad will begin competi- tion starting Monday. Dick Bell, unbeaten sophomore in the Big Ten in dual competition, will share duties with Brian Marcus, Pete Fishbach and Ron Teeguarden. Southern California and UCLA are rated favorites in the tour- nament. The Trojans bring Sam Smith and Bob Lutz, ranked 11th and 14th nationally. RyunCoasts T880,Win ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (A) - Easy running Jim Ryun, weaving through a crowded 12-man field, clocked his best 880 of this year in 1:47.2 last night in the United States Track and Field Federation championships. Ryun, who practiced for the meet in the 7,500-foot altitude of Alamosa, Colo., appeared relaxed throughout the race at Albuquer- que's 5,100 feet. Kansas track Coach Bob Tim- mons said Ryun also would run the mile tonight. D e l m o n McNabb, Louisiana State, hurled the javelin 266 feet, 31/2 inches-best in the nation this year-in another final. D a v i d Adkins bettered the USTFF mark in the 440 intermed- iate hurdles with a 50.5 clocking. The old record was 50.8 in 1966 by Richard Johnson of Colgate. T h e USTFF Championships opened last night without Ama- teur Athletic Union sanction. The USTFF, whose parent body -the National Collegiate Athletic Association-is at odds with the AAU, says it did not seek the sanction. .Ryun was affected by lack of sanction in last year's USTFF meet when he ran a world record time of 1:44.9 in the half-mile only to have the standard disal- lowed internationally because the meet had not won AAU blessing. Should Ryun or any other com- petitors crack a record barrier, USTFF officials perdict a similar course. Conrad Nightingale, who also trained with Ryun at Adams State College, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase by a few steps over New Mexico's Web Loudat. Night- ingale was timed in 9:04.9, com- pared with Loudat's 9:05.0. Kent State, Ohio, sprinter Orin Richburg missed the meet record in the 220 by one-tenth of a sec- ond when he won in 20.7.
