THE MICHIGAN DAILY TTTV.QlMAv Tim v i THE MICHIGAN DAILY ,ryw~aw. A 'U? VW7W VT A. ~.J~d0A?~Z~ P LJI.jZ '.l'UE"bVA%, JULY Y1 s' Monpetit Clinches Olympic Slot ESIEDtSr 0., with a score of 105 points. Cleveland was second with 85, and Columbus, Ind., tallied 55 for a third-place finish. Clark's record time of 2:42;3 was in the 200 meter event, eclipsing the old record of 2:43.1. Clark, a local Ann Arbor star and a senior at Michigan, defeated the former record holder, Bill Mulliken, of Miami (Ohio) University. Mulli- ken is considered Clark's toughest competition, after he won the in- door AAU meet at Yale last win- ter. The 200 is an individual event in the Olympic games for which two Americans will compete in Rome this August. There is also room for a 100-meter breast stroker on the 400 meter medley relay team so Clark has two possi- bilities for an Olympic bid. Spectacular Time Clark swam a winning 100 meters in the time of 1:16.6 and turned in a blistering 1:14.5 leg of a relay. Gus Stager, Wolverine, Detroit and Olympic coach, called the latter time "very spectacular." Stager also commented on the 200 meter race. "It was a good race," he said, "and Ron went away from him at the end." Other Michigan stars finished well in the meet. Former team member Dr. Burwell "Bumpy" Jones won the 200 meter freestyle and Dave Gillanders took the 200 butterfly event on Saturday. Gillanders, however, was only fourth in the 100 butterfly on Sunday. Tony Tashnick, gradu- ated Wolverine swim captain, New Trier, Ill., high school stand- finished ahead of him as did a out, Fred Schmidt. Schmidt won the event. Other high Michigan placers included a second-place relay team of Tashnick and three Ann Arbor- ites, Steve Thrasher, Cy Hopkins, and Clark. Dick Nelson was second in the 100 meter breaststroke and Win Pendleton placed fourth in the 400 meter freestyle. Pendleton, Darntop, Warren Uhler and John Dumont were second in the 800- meter freestyle relay. USED CARS 1953 PONTIAC. Automatic, new plugs, exhaust. $245. NO 5-6203 evenings. The Americans got to McCorm- ick in the sixth after he had scooted through two innings de- spite control trouble. K u e n n opened the sixth with a single but was out trying to stretch it into a double. Then Malzone's fumble on Kaline's grounder, a single by New York's Bill Skowron .$$ 4Wr and a walk to Elston Howard loaded the bases. After Chicago's Nellie Fox singled to left, driving in Kaline, Alston removed McCormick and called in Face. Then came the double play ball to Aparicio. In the eighth, Kuenn was safe when Neal's throw pulled Buhl off the bag at first. Kaline followed with his two-run homer.
