THE MICHIGAN DAILY University Meteorologists To Study Diffusion of Gases ' - PROF. WALTER CHAMBERS ...school site planning Chambers To Discuss School Sites Prof. Walter L. Chambers, chairman of the landscape archi- tecture department in the archi- tecture and design school, is par- ticipating in the sixty-first an- nual convention of the American Society of Landscape Architects in New York City yesterday through tomorrow, Prof. Chambers serves as mod- erator for a panel discussion titled "College and School Site Plan- ning Design for Tomorrow's Needs" tomorrow, Visitor Gives Tiny Camera A bite-sized camera which pho- tographs the inside of the human stomach has been presented to Dr. H. Marvin Pollard of the Uni- versity Medical Center by Prof. S. Yamagata of Tohoku University, Japan. Dr. Yamagata is visiting the department of medicine for three months. The gastro-camera, about the size of the tip of the index finger, contains its own light source and film supply. It is attached to a slender instrument so it can be manipulated after being swal- lowed, According to Dr. Pollard, no similar instrument is made in the United States, but some versions of the Japanese gastro-camera have been given a limited trial. The University meteorologists will study how Waste gases from an industrial plant diffuse in air over large bodies of.water, such as the Great Lakes. Prof. E. Wendell Hewson, dir- ector of the University Meteor- ologic Laboratories, and Prof. Gerald C. Gill, of the meteorology department, have received a three year grant of $150,000 from the National Science Foundation to make the study, part of the pro- gram of the Great Lakes Research Division of the Institute of Sci- ence and Technology. The pattern of diffusion of waste gases over water is diffi- rent from that over ordinary land surface because the water is smooth and therefore induces much less mechanical mixing of the air, Prof. Hewson explains, Inversions Develop Temperature inversions, in which there is an air temperature increase with height instead of the more customary air tempera- ture decrease with height, develop in spring and summer when warm air flows from the land over cool lake waters. Diffusion patterns are greatly influenced by inver- sion layers, he points out. The new research grant will permit detailed study of these in- versions and of their influence on the dispersion of waste gases from industrial plants located along Great Lakes shorelines, Profs. Hewson and Gill, pio- neers in air pollution studies, were the first to point out the import- ance of an inversion aloft in "trapping" air contaminants in the surface layers of the atmos- phere. Causes Smog A similar condition has since been shown to be the primary cause of Los Angeles smog, Prof. Hewson explains. The University group has been carrying out a survey of meteor- ological conditions and the associ- ated behavior of waste gases in the vicinity of a nuclear power plant at Monroe; and a similar study is being started at the site of a recently announced power plant at Big Rock Point near Charlevoix. Prof. David Chandler, director of the Great Lakes Research Div- ision, emphasized the importance of this type of research. "The industrialization of the shores of the Great Lakes, a pro- cess which the opening of the Great Lakes Seaway will accel- erate, makes basic research of this type imost essential," Prof. Chandler said. "Industry around the Great Lakes will have to adopt a 'good neighbor' policy to avoid spread- ing air-born wastes, not only among the Great Lakes states but also among the Canadian provin- ces of Ontario and Quebec. This research will help to provide a sound basis for such a policy." Achievement Rec ognized Prfo0. Irene Place, assistant pro- fessor of office management, has received the Achievement Award of the Detroit chapter 'of the Sys- tems and Procedures Association of America. This annual award includes a trip to the, Association's Interna- tional Systems Meeting to be held next fall in New York City. It is granted .annually to the chapter member contributing most to the Association's welfare aid program. Prof. Place is editor of the as- sociation's Systems and Proced- ures Quarterly. Speech Clinic Undertakes New Program A new program for children with cleft palate has been started this summer by the University speech clinic. The program, sponsored by the Michigan Crippled Children's Commission, brings ten Jacskson children by bus to Ann Arbor five days a week for group classes and individual therapy. Afternoon ses- sions include luncheon provided by the MCCC. The children in the inaugural program are seven to. nine years old. In the past, the University speech clinic has had children with cleft palate in its therapy classes, but this is the first time that the youngsters have had a specially designed program com- pletely devoted to them. - "Most speech clinics do not have a special therapy program for cleft palate, which occurs in about one out of every six hun- dred children," says H. Harlan Bloomer, director of the clinic. REAL ESTATE STOP and SEE 1804 Cooley Ave. By owner, three yr. old, three bedroom ranch. Slate entry, large living room, dining area, tile bath.
