A study conducted by his office has shown that the average Michigan resident pays only 13 cents for every thousand students in all state-supported institutions of higher learning, Niehuss says, whereas taxpayers in 18 other 'U' Workshops Study Facets Of Counseling A number of workshops are of- fered by the University this sum- mer. Two workshops in guidance and counseling began Monday and will continue until July 30; they are the General Workshop in Guid- ance, and the Workshop for Visit- ing Teachers. The guidance workshop will deal with practical problems of under- standing individuals, environmen- tal problems affecting individual adjustment, counseling, placement follow-up, and organization and administration of guidance serv- ices. Two workshops in school, com- munity and home relations will be held August 1-12, each offering two hours of Universtly credit. Not only is higher education less costly for the Michigan tax- payer, but he obtains more for the money he does spend. "In Montana, for instance, $1.57 'is spent to educate 1,000 students, of whom not one is a physician or a dentist, and less than 100 are graduate or graduate-professional students," Niehuss pointed out. "But at the University of Michi- gan, the 19 cents from each citizen buys a year's education for 1,000 students, or whom 800 are under- graduates and 400 are graduate and graduate-professional stu- dents, including doctors, lawyers and dentists. Even if the state of Michigan were to increase its contribution to public higher education as much as two or three times, it still would be paying a low price for the production of each Michi- gan college graduate. The study on which these state- ments were based was made by Theodore H. Davis of the office of the dean of faculties.
