Over 40 political scientists will attend the four day conference from Sept. 12 - 15, under the aus- pices of the American Political Science Association. Meetings for the group which meets every other year between I P SA international congresses, will be held in Rackham Amphi- theatre. Prof. James K. Pollock, chair- man of the political science de- partment and former IPSA presi- dent, and E. M. Kirkpatrick, per- manent secretary of the APSA, are in charge of local arrange- ments. Top officials of the IPSA plan- ning to attend the conference next month are President J a c q u e s Chapsal, director of the Institute of Political Study in Paris, and maghtigh of Geneva, Switzerland. The IPSA executive committee will meet one day before and after the scheduled conference dates. The meetings will be open to University faculty and students, space permitting. Donald Shapiro e has been named the first director of the University and Wayne State Uni- versity Institute of Continuing Legal Education beginning this month. The Institute was established by the University, Wayne State and the State Bar of Michigan in January, 1960, operating on a self- sustaining basic. Prof. Charles Joiner of the Law School heads the executive committee. Shapiro, who conducted a suc- cessful Young Lawyers Seminar for Institute earlier this year and has edited a three-volume "Mihhi- gan Basic Practice Series", will also serve on the University law faculty. He received his undergraduate degree from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., and his law degree from Harvard University in 1956. He was previouslya professor at the Detroit College of Law and an instructor at Boston Univer- sity. Development Gifts Reported The University's Development Council obtained gifts and grants totalling nearly $1.4 million in the last year, the annual report issued by Director Alan W. Mac- Carthy states. They.Capital Gifts program led the list with $991,000 and approxi- mately $390,000 was obtained from 17,500 contributors to the Michi- gan Alumni Fund. Contributions to the Phoenix Memorial Atomic Research Pro- gram, whose s u p p o r t is coordi- nated by the Development Coun- cil, were not included in the re- port. The Phoenix total was $1.9 million. An outside survey lists the Uni- versity Development Council as first among similar programs in the Western Conference, for 1959.
