THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRI MAJOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Tigers Outhomer Senators- CIEUC Ro hp rxninpdPrc The Detroit Tigers built up enough early lead to offset Wash-' ington's late home run and de- feated the Senators 9-5 yesterday. Jim Lemon hit his 22nd and 23rd home runs and Harmon Killebrew his eighth, but all came after the Tigers had staked Frank Lary to a 7-0 lead. AAU Meet Swimmers TOLEDO (AP) - Coach Bob Kip- huth watched a swimmer churn past and commented: "It's a good pool and they're in top form." The 69-year-old Kiphuth, form- er Yale and five - time Olympic swim coach, was putting his New Haven Swim Club through a work- out in preparation for the Na- tional AAU Men's Outdoor Cham- pionships, which start at Scott Park Pool today. Among the 350 contestants are the nation's top swimmers and div- ers-the men who will carry the United States' hopes in the Olym- pics. Kiphuth ticked off the list of AAU events and commented on the. outstanding performers. In the freestyle sprints he mentioned sev- eral California swimmers - Lance Larson, Steve Clark, George Har- rison, Dennis Rounsaville, Joe Al- kire. And of course, there's New Haven's Tim Jecko and Jeff Far- rell, defending AAU ,100 and 200- meter indoor and outdoor cham- pion. However, "Anything can happen in the sprints," Kiphuth said. The flow of names and events continued . . . distance freestyle,' butterfly ("The woods ire full of 'em," he commented wryly), the backstroke. "We've got the greatest (team) depth in the world," he summed up. The United States should make a strong showing in the Olympics, Kiphuth predicted. He said "The! winners here are likely to be the winners at Detroit," where the Olympic trials will be held Aug. 2-5. The outcome of one AAU event, the breastroke will have' a bearing on the overall strength of the Imen's Olympic team, the coach said. Rocky Colavito's 20th home run, coming with two mates aboard in the fifth inning, helped to get Lary in front. A walk and two singles preceded Colavito's home run off Bill Fischer. Lary, who hit four batters, yielded Lemon's first home run in the sixth. Lemon started the eighth with another blast, Billy Gardner singled and Killebrew hit one over the left centerfield fence. Dave Sisler came on for Detroit and did not allow the Senators another run. Lary hit Reno Bertola twice and Bob Allison and Julio Becquer once each. Bertola was removed from the field on a stretcher after he was struck in the head by a pitch in the seventh. Pittsburgh opened up a 1% game lead in the senior circuit by clout- ing the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 in a game played on the West Coast.. Hal Smith smashed a two-run homer to aid the Pirate cause. Milwaukee's challenge for the National League lead was delayed yesterday by the St. Louis Cardi- nals who pounded out a 9-4 vic- tory to end the Braves' seven- game winning streak. Robin Roberts pitched a one- hitter, allowing only an infield single byFelipe Alou with two gone in the fifth inning, enroute to Philadelphia's 3-0 victory over San Francisco. The Phillies scored all their runs in the third, hand- ing Jack Sanford his eighth de- feat. It was Robert's second shut out of the year, and 35th of his career dating back to 1948. His 1960 won- lost record now is 6-9. Chicago's Bob Anderson went all the way wit ha seven-hitter, beating Cincinnati 8-1. Bob Pur- key was chased in the seventh in- ning when the Cubs sent 11 bat- ters to the plate and scored six runs. The other American League teams were idle but they will be back at it tonight when the Yanks open a four-game series at Yankee Stadium against the Chicago White Sox who are in second place, only one game back. Third- place Cleveland will be at Boston, Detroit at Baltimore and Kansas City at Boston in other night ac- tion. The Braves could have taken the lead, for a few hours at least, if they had downed St. Louis. Carl Willey was rolling along with a one-hitter and a 3-0 lead until the sixth. St. Louis, shut out Wednesday night by Warren Spahn, broke loose in the sixth to score six times, sending 12 men to bat. Larry Jackson, lifted during a Milwaukee threat in the seventh boosted his season record to 12-8. FOR RENT 3 ROOM apartment, partly furnished.
