Ia rris, Plummer Cast in Stratford Shakespeare At Stratford, Ontario, the 1960 Shakespearean Festival is in its fourth week of summer repertory theatre and looking forward to a busy two months of theatre, con- certi and film presentations. Shakespeare is only the feature attraction in a long list of events that includes Tyrone Guthrie's new production of "HMS Pina- fore," two original Canadian plays, a two-week film festival, and con- appearances by Glenn Gould, ' Oscar Shumsky, and Leonard Rose. As in past summers, Stratford has mounted one each of Shakes- peare's comedies, histories and tragedies. This summer, the selec- tions are all from an early period of Shakespeare's writing career. "King John" is the early history play. In the title role is Douglas Rain, while Christopher Plummer appears as Philip the Bastard. Julie Harris, Max Helpmann, Helen Burns and Ann Casson also have roles. Douglas Seale directed "King John" and John Cook has written incidental music. This summer's comedy is "A Midsummer Night's Dream"; it stars Kate Reid as Helena, Leo Ciceri as Lysander, and Tony Van Bridge as Bottom. Douglas Camp- bell has directed the production while Harry Somers is the com- poser and Brian Jackson the set designer. The much-loved tragedy of "Romeo and Juliet" is the final production of Shakespeare this summer. Bruno Gerussl and Julie1 Harris are the lovers and Christo- pher Plummer plays Mercutio. Kate Reid, Douglas Rain, Ann Casson and Jack Creley are among the supporting players. "Romeo and Juliet" was directed by Michael Langham. Louis Apple- baum composed the music. The' designer is Tanya Moiseiwitsch,, who also designed "King John." Performances of Shakespeare take place nightly, Monday through Saturday, at 8:30 p.m., with matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. The three plays are scheduled for successive performances throughout the sea- son. Gilbert and Sullivan's "HMS Pinafore," in a modern production by Tyrone Guthrie, Is the Strat- ford musical comedy offering this year. It will have its final per- formance August 6.
