Gypsy finished at 8:52 p.m.,and Falcon II came in at 9:11 with an elapsed time of 61:11:14. Both are Class A boats. Gypsy will not necessarily be the final winner, however. Final standings are based on corrected time. The rest of the 101-boat fleet was becalmed and a third finisher was not expected until about 11 p.m. Gypsy and Falcon II were in sight two hours before finishing. As they came across, no other boats were in sight. Two Lead in Golf WICHITA, Kan. - Three-time Oregon champion Carol Jo Skala and five-time Kansas titlist Na- tasha Fife matched par 72's for co-medalist honors in the 32nd annual Women's Trans-Mississip- pi Golf Tournament yesterday. Yank Heads Fencers BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Ed Richards, a Boston school teacher who is rated the finest three-weapon fencer in the United States, compiled the top score in the first round of the world fenc- ing championships yesterday. Richards, United States foil champion and runnerup in epee at the recent national champion- ships, compiled a 'record of five victories, with 25 points and only six points against him, to advance Ito the second round. By The Associated Press KANSAS CITY - Whitey Ford posted his eighth victory and the New York Yankees tightened their grip on first place in the American League by defeating the Kansas; City Athletics 3-1 yesterday. An error by Billie Consolo paved the way for New York's first two- runs, which were unearned. With' one out in the second inning, El- ston Howard on second and Hector Lopez on first, second baseman Jerry Lumpe fielded a bouncer off the bat of Cletis Boyer, but Con- solo bobbled the throw to second. Howard scored and Lopez took third, subsequently scoring on Ford's sacrifice fly. * * * LOS ANGELES - Don Rudolph pitched a four-hitter and Bob Johnson drove in three runs with a homer and single yesterday as the Washington Senators defeated the Los Angeles Angels 4-1. Rudolph (3-3) let the Angels get only one man as far as second base until Lee Thomas spoiled his shut- out with a home run in the eighth. Rudolph struck out three and didn't walk a man. NEW YORK - The San Fran- cisco Giants used a couple of rally- killing relief jobs by Don Larsen and young Bob Garibaldi to beat the New York Mets 3-2 last night and close in on National League leading Los Angeles. The victory, which gave the Gi- ants a 2-1 series victory, pulled them to within two games of the Dodgers, idle last night. * * * PITTSBURGH - Johnny Logan of Pittsburgh hit a grand slam home run, his first extra base hit of the season, in leading the Pi- rates to a 5-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals last night. MILWAUKEE - Southpaw Bob Hendley fashioned a masterful six- hitter in hurling the Milwaukee Braves to a 3-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds last night with a help of home runs by Joe Adcock and Roy McMillan.
