SPORTS SHORTS: U.S. Takes Davis Cup Lead r *F1Eflt9r7 Kel Nagle, 41-year-old Austral- ian who edged Palmer by one stroke in the 1960 British Open, was second with 282. It was a case of records all the day for Palmer. He had a record of 67 in the morning over the 7,- 045-yard par 36-36--72 Old Troon course. His total of 71-69-67-69- 276 was two shots better than any previous total in this 102-year-old championship. And his winning margin of six shots equalled the previous record. The last man to win the British title by six shots was Walter Hag- en, another famous American, who whipped Johnny Farrell by six shots in 1929 at Muirfield in Scot- land. Nagle, as rugged a scrapper as they come, finished with 71-71-70- 70-282. Then came Phil Rodgers, La Jolla, Calif., with 75-70-72-72 -289. Brian Auggett of England also was on the same mark with 75-71-74-69--289. Bob Charles, the left-handed hitter from New Zealand was next with 75-70-70-75--290. Sam Snead, the 50-year-old slammer from White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., and Australia's four-time winner of this event, Peter Thomson, were tied with 292 in sixth place. Snead had rounds of 76-73-72-71' and Thomson shot By The Associated Press CLEVELAND-The United States shot into 2-0 lead in the first round of the American Zone Davis Cup tennis competition as Chuck McKinley and Jon Douglas won four-set singles matches over Can- ada's Francois Godbout and Don Fontana. McKinley beat Godbout, 6-4, 3- 6, 6-3, 6-4 and Douglas defeated Fontana, 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Captain Bob Kelleher of the U.S. squad said after the matches: "It's nice to be where we are now." If America's doubles combina- tion of McKinley and Dennis Ral- ston can whip Godbout and Fon- tana in today's match, the U.S. team will have won the right to meet Mexico at Mexico City Au- gust 4-5-6 in the next round of play. Sunday's final two singles matches would not affect the out- come. Sikes, Ahn Lead BUFFALO, N.Y. - Dick Sikes, serious but fast-moving defending champion from Springdale, Ark., and Hung Soo Ahn, the tiny Ha- waiian with the full-circle swing, won the right to meet in the fin- als of the 37th United States Pub- lic Links golf championships. The 36-hole championship fin- als will be played today over sub- urban Tonawanda's S h e r i d a n Park, a 6,697-yard, par-71 course in the north suburbs of Buffalo. * * * Cochran Tops Field ST. LOUIS-Bob Cochran, 49- year-old Walker Cup player from Major Lea gue Standings -AP Wirephoto RETAINS TITLE--Arnold Palmer, shown receiving a victory kiss from his wife Winnie, retained his British Open Golf Champion- ship yesterday with two magnificent sub-par rounds. 72 and 71 yesterday to go with his first two rounds of 70 and 77, Scores of the other Americans were: U.S. Open Champion Jack Nicklaus, from Columbus, Ohio, 80-72-74-79-305 and former U.S. Public Links Champion Don Es- sig, from Indianapolis, 76-72-79- 81-308. Palmer started the day two strokes ahead of Nagle. After two FLAT TIRE? NEED REPAIRS! BEAVER'S BIKE & HARDWARE holes he was all square. Nagle birdied the first two holes. That would have been enough to rattle and unnerve most golf- ers. All it did for Palmer was fire him into the hottest streak of golf ever seen in this ancient cham- pionship. Always good under pressure,1 Palmer had six birdies in his rec- ord morning round, four in the last six holes. At the 54-hole mark, Nagle, himself around in a 2-under-par 70, trailed Palmer by five strokes. But Palmer still hadn't finished tearing apart Troon. He came out as hot in the afternoon as he had been in the morning. He shot another six birdies in that round for a 3-under-par 69. Palmer was out in 33 and the Palmer-Nagle duel, one that look- ed promising early in the day, no longer could be described as a duel at all. 13 Days St. Louis, and three youngsters moved into the semifinals of the 59th annual Trans-Mississippi Golf Tournament at Old Warson County Club yesterday. Joining Cochran were 18-year- old George Boutell of Phoneix, Ariz., 20-year-old Harry Toscano Jr. of New Castle, Pa., and 22- year-old Bob Ryan of Tulsa, Okla. The 36-hole championship match will be played today. * * * Crampton Leads in Detroit DETROIT - Bruce Crampton, who credits clean living for his iron man stamina, seized the sec- ond round lead of the $35,000 Mo- tor City Open yesterday with a sizzling 11-under-par total of 131. The 26-year-old Australian - the only player to compete on the grueling PGA tour all 28 weeks this year-fired a 32-33-65 to go with his first round 66.
