E FOUR THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY. JULY 1 2. 1982 FOR THE MICHIGAl~ DAILY TJITTfl~T~AV TTTV.V 19 1OE~9 ....aJrJFa., *FUJX *fo LZ *U ltimore Downs IL Stars ROCHESTER, N.Y. VP~)-- Jim Gentile, Dick Williams and Gus Triandos slammed home runs for the Baltimore Orioles last night as the American Leaguers defeated the International League All- Stars, 8-5. The loss was the first for the IL stars in their last four en- counters with Major League clubs. Home runs drove in all of the All-Star runsdoff right-handers Jack Fisher and Dave Vineyard. Gentile, who has hit 21 homers in the AL this season, smashed a tape-measure job off Toronto right-hander Carl Greene, after Whitey Herzog walked in the fourth. In the seventh Williams belted a Carl Mathias pitch over the left field fence. Triandos led off the eighth with a four-baser off Richmond south- paw Al Downing to start a five- run uprising that sewed it up for the Orioles. SPORTS SHORTS: Pipers Of By The Associated Press CLEVELAND-Cleveland Piper's President George Steinbrenner said yesterday Jerry Lucas, three- time All-America from Ohio State, may get more money now that the Pipers are in the National Basket- ball Association. Steinbrenner said he was sure "Lucas will play with us-even if only on weekends, because of his educational plans. He's the boss and I'm sure we can reach an agreement about his availability." Steinbrenner said he would talk with Lucas this weekend in Cleve- land about when he will play with the Pipers if he decides to con- tinue 'his schooling, and "a few other things." "If it's more money he wants we'll be glad to give it to him," he said. fer Lucas More Money with the hot breath of a Califor- nia collegian warming their backs. Big John Archer of San Francis-! co, the medalist with a 36-hole to- tal of 145, easily made it through the first round. Ex-boxer Lalu Sabotin, the run- ner-up, was pushed to 19 holes be- fore beating E. Arthur St. John of Oklahoma City, and defending champion Dick Sikes of Spring- dale, Ark., advanced with a 3 and 2 victory over Tom Hovey of Utica, N.Y. Lurking in the background was 19-year-old John Joseph, a San Mateo College student from Hay- warq,, Calif. He eliminated John Floch of Troy, Mich., 6 and 5, then played out the round for an unofficial 69-best round of the tourney thus far. Lane Upsets Champ ST. LOUIS-Ben Lane Jr., an unheralded youngster from Amar- illo, Tex., upset defending cham- pion Herb Durham of Dallas, 3 and 2, in the first round of the 59th Annual Trans-Mississippi Golf Tournament. * * * Creed Misses Ace SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Favorite Clifford Ann Creed of Alexandria, La., missed a hole-in-one by only an inch in winning a second round match in the 62nd Women's West- ern Amateur Golf Tournament here yesterday. She missed the one-shotter on1 the final, 135-yard hole of a 4- and-3 victory over Jane Nelson Weiss of Indianapolis, former Cur- tis Cup team member. The 100-pound Louisiana preci- sion player matched par for the 15 holes at South Bend Country Club and the longest of her three birdie putts was 15 feet. * * * Swims Channel-Underwater DOVER, England-Fred Balda- sare conquered the English Chan- nel in an under water swim in a frogman's suit yesterday and then said he was retiring to produce movie documentaries. "I have given up two years of my life to do this and it has cost me $35,000. My life savings are gone. "Having achieved my ambition, I now want to get back into film producing. I Palmer's 71 Only Good U.S. Round TROON, Scotland 03) - Aching Arnold Palmer started defense of his British Open Golf Champion- ship with a 1-under-par 71 yester- day but his chief American rival,, young Jack Nicklaus, virtually blew himself out of contention with a fat 80. Nicklaus, the reigning U.S. Open Champion, and Gene Littler of San Diego, Calif., the man he suc- ceeded, both are in danger of failing to make the cut after to- day's round when the field will be sliced to a maximum of 50 players. Littler, one of the preliminary favorites, like Nicklaus had trou- ble with Old Troon's 7,045 yards of heather, gorse and sand and came in with a 79. "I don't want to talk about it," Littler told inter- viewers grumpily. Palmer's steady round placed him only two shots back of the first round leader, 32-year-old Keith MacDonald of a famous English and Scottish golfing clan, who shot 35-34-69. He was the only one of the eight American qualifiers in a strong contending position as the tour- nament moved into its second round. 1/3 OUNCES 0EHA 2UCEIMR MICHIGAN DAILY CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING RATES LINES 1 DAY 3 DAYS 6 DAYS 2 .70 1.95 3.45 3 .85 2.40 4.20 4 1.00 2.85 4.95 Figure 5 average words to a line.
