Y, JULY 7,'1961 THE 0AIIA PAGE THREE Y, JULY 7, 19G THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGK ThRIi~K saaid :14iiva: aa Prof. Haber To Join Group Advising on Redevelopment Secretary of Commerce Luther H Hodges has announced the ap- pointment of Prof. William.Haber of the economics department to the National Public Advisory Com- nittee on Area Redevelopment. The purpose of the committee is to provide Hodges with recom- mendations concerning problems of long-range unemployment in depressed areas and selected seg- ments of the national economy. Funds for this type of study were appropriated by Congress earlier this year as part of a $400 million program designed to aid chronically depressed areas. The legislation authorized $19 million for economic surveys and retraining of workers stranded by the wasting away of industries which employed them. At the Industrial Relations Con- ference sponsored by the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations in March, Prof. Haber listed dis- tressed areas where the principal industry declines in importance as one of the three main facets of the hnemployment problem in the United States.' He urged vigorous job-creating measures by the government to counter the trend in unemploy- ment. PROF. This year's orientation students have been very lucky in the weather.
