PAGE FOUR THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, JUNE 26, IDGI PAGE FOUR TIlE MICIUGAN DAILY FRIDAY, JUNE 26, 1964 MAJOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Orioles Sweep Y ank Series By The Associated Press BALTIMORE-Boog Powell and Brooks Robinson clouted home runs in support of Steve Barber's three-hit pitching last night as the Baltimore Orioles whipped the New York Yankees 3-1 and com- pleted a three-game series sweep. The only run off Barber, who evened his record at 4-4, was a leadoff homer by Joe Pepitone in the third inning. The left-hander had to pitch out of trouble in the fourth and fifth innings, however, when he encountered control problems. A double play ended the New York threat in the fourth, and Barber struck out Bobby Richard- son with the bases loaded in the fifth after a run was cut down at the plate on an attempted squeeze play. ST. PAUL - MINNEAPOLIS - Max Alvis, Larry Brown and Dick Howser led the way as Cleveland crushed the Minnesota Twins 8-1 yesterday. Alvis hit his third homer in two games, connecting with one on in the fourth inning for a lead the Indians never surrendered. Brown also belted a two-run homer and Howser went 3-for-5. Jack Kralick and Don McMa- hon collaborated on a three-hitter for Cleveland. Kralick, who rap- ped out three hits, was lifted in the seventh for a pinch hitter and McMahon finished. Ex-Indian Jim Grant was Min- nesota's starter and loser. * * * ST. LOUIS-Ken Boyer doubled home two runs in the eighth inn- ing, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a 4-2 victory over the Houston Colts yesterday. Loser Bob Bruce walked Curt Flood with one out and Bill White singled with two out, setting up Boyer's smash to right center field. Dick Groat's double brought in another run after reliever Jim Owens intentionally walked Bob Skinner. Roger Craig, who singled across the first Cardinal run after Julian Javier doubled in the third, got the pitching victory. Craig went out for a pinch-hitter in the eighth after allowing six hits and Glen Hobbie pitched the ninth. NEW YORK - Jerry Lynch crashed a pair of home runs and Bill Mazeroski connected once in the Pittsburgh attack as the Pi- rates whipped the New York Mets yesterday for the 11th time in 13 meetings, 8-1. Supported by a 13-hit offense lefty Joe Gibbon coasted to his fifth victory to go with his two defeats. Gibbon, who had three of the hits, permitted only four singles, two by Ron Hunt. The Mets' only run was un- earned and Gibbon had nobody to blame but himself. After Hunt singled in the sixth inning, Gib- bon threw wild in a pickoff at- tempt and Hunt took second, from where he scored on Joe Chris- topher's single. Jack Fisher started for the Mets and failed to last the second inn- ing. He was tagged for two runs in the first after two were out on a triple by Roberto Clemente, a double by Will Stargell and a single by Lynch. Only Two US Tennis Men Left WIMBLEDON, England (') - Defending champion Chuck Mc- Kinley of San Antonio survived another shaky day on the tennis courts of Wimbledon yesterday, while other Americans were go- ing down in large numbers. McKinley, who romped to the title last year without the loss of a set, had to pull out all the stops for a third-round victory over Torben Ulrich of Denmark, 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. It was the second close call in a row for McKinley, who is sec- ond-seeded this year, and almost the only American player of note left in the men's singles. Billie Jean Moffitt of Long Beach, Calif., third-seeded in the women's singles, moved into lhe third round with an easy 6-2, 6-2, victory over Donna Floyd Fales of New York. That was only one of several American match-ups as the tour- nament finished its fourth day. Arthur Ashe of Richmond, Va., defeated his doubles partner, Bill Bond of San Diego, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0. Ron Holmberg of Brooklyn trimmed Marty Riessen of Evans- ton, Ill., in a marathon five-setter carried over from Wednesday, 14-16, 11-13, 6-4, 6-2, 10-8. That left McKinley and Ashe as the only Americans in the last 16 in men's singles. Holmberg must meet Rafael Osuna, Mexican hold- er of the U.S. singles title, in a third round match, and is an underdog.
