Washington By The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA - Houston's Dick Farrel won his 11th game on the 12th attempt last night as the Colts defeated the National League leading Philadelphia Phillies 2-1. Farrell, who has lost six straight since becoming the first 10-game winner in the majors on June 14, finally nailed his 11th victory when Jim Owens relieved in the ninth and put down the Phillies' final threat. Californian Leads Gir Five Event NEW YORK (A"P)-Mrs. Pat Win- slow, the favorite frqm San Mateo, Calif., won two of 'three penta- thlon events yesterday and grab- bed the first day lead in the U.S. Women's Olympic track and field trials at Randall's Island. Mrs. Winslow, who previously had bettered the Olympic quali- fying standard of 4,500 points in a national meet at San Mateo, compiled 2,686 points in the high jump, shot put and 80-meter hurdles. The performance, which gave her a lead of 151 points over Sally Griffith, San Jose, Calif., made her a virtual shoo-in for the No. 1 spot since today's final events, the broad jump and the 200 meter run, are her best. None of the other eight compet- itors appeared likely to surpass the standard of 4,500 points for the event that has been added to the Olympic program just this year. Mrs. Winslow won the high jump at 5 feet-i inch, the shot put at 43%' and finished fourth in the 80-meter hurdles in 12.1. Miss Griffith won that event in 11.5. In addition to the final two events in the pentathlon, today's program includes trials in all in- dividual track and field events, with finals in all such events set for tomorrow. Wes Covington, who collected two of the Phillies' four hits off Farrell, doubled with one out, and Hal Woodeshick replaced Farrell. Pinch hitter Gus Triandos then bounced a single up the middle, scoring Covington. That brought in Owens, who got out of the jam by getting Tony Taylor to ground into a doubleplay. The victory brought Farrel's record to 11-7. The Colts scored both their runs in the fourth inning off -Chris Short. Short, who had won three in a row and seven of his last nine, took the loss for a. 10-6 record. *~ * * KANSAS CITY -Elston How- ard's wrong-field home run in the eighth inning turned into the winning run yesterday as the New York Yankees salvaged the third and final game of their series with the pesky Kansas City Athletics .5-3. Ralph Terry started for New York and gained his third straight victory despite some trouble from his old nemesis - the home run ball. Nellie Mathews connected against the lanky Yankee right- hander in the fifth and Rocky Colavito got his 27th, a two-run shot, in the eighth. Roger Marris' fifth inning homer and a clutch, two-run triple by Tommy Tresh in the seventh had staked New York to a 3-1 lead. Bullfighter Camino Hurt MALAGA, Spain UP) - P a c o Camino, the leading Spanish matador who was featured in Sports Illustrated this week, was gored and seriously injured in a bullfight yesterday. He suffered a six-inch wound in the abdomen while performing with the muleta, or red cape, against his first bull. Camino was treated in the bull- ring's infirmary and then taken to a hospital. Howard's homer over the right field fence in the eighth proved to be the winner, however, when Colavito hit his homer in the home half of the inning. New York's other run came when Clete Boyer doubled, stole third and scored on a single by Tony Kubek in the eighth. * * * MINNEAPOLIS - ST. PAUL - Rich Rollins' seventh-inning fly ball, lost in the sun by right fielder Lee Thomas, dropped in for a tri- ple and drove home the winning run yesterday in Minnesota's 6-5 victory over the Boston Red Box. Harmon Killebrew's 39th homer of the season, a two-run shot in the third, gave the Twins a 5-4 lead that held until the seventh when a walk to Carl Yastrzemsk and singles by Dick Stuart and Bob Tillman tied it. The Red Sox opened with four runs in the first inning, the first on a homer by Felix Mantilla. A walk, an error, a single by Stuart and a sacrifice fly by Tillman brought in three more runs. Minnesota countered with three runs in its half of the inning, two on Jimmie Hall's bases loaded single and the other on a single by Bob Allison. ST. LOUIS - Bill White and Dick Groat each drove in two runs and powered the St. Louis Card- inals to a 5-3yvictory over the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Bob Gibson worked out of num- erous early jams and posted his ninth victory against as many losses. It was his first triumph since July 19. The Cardinals collected only four hits off loser Dick Ellsworth, but they bunched them in two scoring innings. An error by Andre Rodgers set up Groat's run-scoring single in the first inning and Groat also scored on a double by Ken Boyer. White doubled home two more runs in the third after Groat dou- bled and Boyer was walked inten- tionally. PITTSBURGH --Bill Mazeroski drove in three runs with a double and single, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-1 victory over te Los Angeles Dodgers last night. Bob Friend went all the way for the victory, his 10th against 11 defeats, as he scattered nine hits, struck out seven and did not walk a man. Mazeroski 'knocked in the first two Pittsburgh runs with a single off Dodger starter Larry Miller in the third after Manny Mota had bunted safely and Don Clen- denon had doubled. Howie Reed, who relieved Miller, was tagged for consecutive triples by Mota and Clendenon that knocked in another run in the fifth and Mazeroski followed with a run-producing double. .* * * CINCINNATI-Deron Johnson and Frank Robinson each slam- med a triple, double and single, leading a 15-hit attack that car- ried the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-3 victory over .Milwaukee last night.- The Reds got the job done with four-run uprisings in the first and seventh innings.,w Vada Pinson started things in the first with a two-run homer, and after Robinson doubled, John- son doubled him home and sec himself on Leo Cardenas' sing The Reds scored again in third on Robinson's walk and gles by Johnson and Steve Bo Hank Aaron cut the deficit hitting a three-run homer - 18th - for Milwaukee in the si but the Reds came back v their second spree. The feat was charged to Hank Fis 9-7. * * * CHICAGO-Al Kaline trigg a two-run fifth inning upri: with a double and hit a homer in the seventh inning, p ering the Detroit Tigers to a victory over the Chicago W Sox last night. Contact CHICAGO UP) - George Mira, star passing quarterback from Miami of Florida, reinjured his passing arm, and his action may be limited in the College All-Star football game in Soldier Field to- night. Mira has been bothered by a muscle strain in his throwing arm for several weeks and reported "a little pull" while throwing passes in a drill Wednesday night. The first few days of this week, Mira was able to throw in his cus- tomary accurate style and was ex- pected to be a major factor in the All-Star attackagainst the chain- pion Chicago Bears of the National Football League. All-Star Coach Otto Graham confirmed that Mira "pulled that muscle a little bit again." "He stopped throwing the mo- ment he felt a little pull to avoid making the injury worse," said Graham. "I'm not a doctor, but the injury doesn't seem dangerous. I certainly hope he can throw by kickoff time tonight." Graham said he understood the San Francisco 49ers, to whom Mira belongs, would have the star quarterback's injury examined to- day. "Any decision the club makes is all right with me," said Graham. "He is their property and I can understand their concern about endangering Mira's pro chances." Graham already has named Southern California's Pete Beat- hard at starting quarterback against the Bears. The third All- Star quarterback is Jack Concan- non of Boston College, also ex- pected to see considerable action. CHICAGO (P)-Billy Casper, a 210-pounder, and Chi Chi Rod- riquez, 120, knocked seven strokesl off Tam O'Shanter's standard1 with 64's yesterday to lead a first round par-smashing frolic in the Western Golf Open.J Casper, 33, followed by hisi beaming 7-year-old son, fashioned a 31-33 against the par 36-35-71.1 Tam layout that measures 6,686 yards. Chi Chi, the puckish 28-year- old Puerto Rican, carrying on his usual flow of jabber with the gallery, had a string of five straight birdies in scoring 30 on, the front side and came back in 34. Only One Bogey, The long - driving Rodriguez, ninth on the money list with 3075 PACKARD _.. I 18-Hole Miniature Course Now Open _ _ _ _ 1 - - - - I $35,610 in official PGA earnings, had only. one bogey-a five on No. 10 when he hit a fairway trap. He missed matching the course front nine record of 29 when he failed to drop a three-foot eagle putt on the ninth. He closed with a birdie 3 on the 18th by cupping a six-footer. The 64s were only one stroke off the competitive course record. Casper, fourth leading money winner with $62,926, was bothered only by a buzzing movie camera on the first hole and itching from a mild case of hives as he opened. his bid for top money of about $11,000 in the 72-hole tourney. Distracted Casper stopped his second shot on No. 1 when distracted by an amateur movie-making fan. He banged the club into his bag, stepped back, then took it out again. The approach shot caught a trap and he ended up with a bogey 5. "I shook this start off pretty well," said Casper. "I got an eagle three on the second hole with a drive, a four-wood 10 feet from the cup and the'putt. And then to completely satisfy myself I birdie deuced the third by dropping a 30 foot putt." After a bogey on No. 10, Casper highlighted his back nine with three birdies, two of them with 30-foot putts. Rodriguez' string of five birdies, one' short of the PGA best this year, came on successive putts of 6, 20, 17, 12 and 17 feet. On the 501-yard 15th he again missed an Veech of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; Pete Fleming of Hot Springs, Ark., and Australian Bruce Devlin. More than two dozen broke par. British Open champion Tony Lema was bracketed at 70 with at least eight others while the 69 crowd included Larry Mowry, Dave Hill, Bill Collins, Frank Stranahan, Skee Riegel and Jay Herbert. Finding the going a little rough was Jack Nicklaus. He was lost in the stampede with a 72. The field of 153 will be trimmed to the low 75 and ties after today's round and to the low 60 and ties after 54 holes tomorrow. ii on any i ", ; ; . ,, ' ,rr., _ tai I ' i Subscription or ...- , .,ry .- _ __ T s _. _ \' 7 3 If.
