(Continued from Page 1) missioned at the March 4 faculty meeting to study the general stu- dies degree. According to com- Smitee chairman Prof. Ronald Ti- kofsky, the committee felt the BS provided "an already existing and academically credible alternative to the Bachelor of Arts degree." However, Brown said he intro- duced his motion to rename the degree because he didn't think the faculty would accept the propos- al to restructure the BS degree. "You have to call things by their right names, and not deal in gim- micry," he said. Brown said he felt the Bachelor of Science degree was not a degree in science and consequently was extremely mis- leading. "I wanted a honest title the faculty would buy," he added. Brown also sai'd he didn't think' that the general studies degree would lack "educational credibil- ity," a charge which proponents of the restructured BS have made. "People inside the University will know what the degree means," he said. "People outside the University are Just concerned with the fact that you received a degree from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Very few ask what degree program you take," Brown added. The committee's proposal to let individual departments set their own requirements for the BS de- gree was defeated to a large ex- tent because many professors felt this would be an easier or cheaper way of concentrating. "This would be a far easier con- centration program," said Prof. Jacob Price of the history depart- ment. Price estimated that 75 to 90 per cent of the students would take this option. Some professors expressed t h e fear that if the proposal was adopted some departments might not require students.to take as rigorous a concentration program as now required. These professors believe a program without such requirements was a concentration program unworthy of their sup- port. Others felt that if individual de- partments were to set the degree requirements t h e department's burden would increase. Still others were concerned about the ramifications the con- centration program might have on the college as a whole if one deb- partment decided to require stu- dents to only take professionally oriented courses.
