against SDS for sit-in

At the preliminary hearing, the
defendants will be asked to "show
cause" why disciplinary action
should not be taken against them.
Under normal procedure, a full
hearing for any students unable
to show cause will be held one
week after the preliminary hear-
ing, April 16.
Under SGC rules, the CSJ is
limited as to possible punishment
of students found guilty of break-
ing the code. Each individual
found guilty may be given a warn-
ingo or a fine not to exceed $50.'
If the CSJ finds SDS, as an
organization, guilty of violating
the code, it simply may warn SDS,
curtail its activities for a period
not to exceed four months, or fine
the organization up to $250.
Curtailment of SD$ activities
could include withdrawal of right
to office space in the Student Ac-
tivities Building or other privileges
of student organizations.
Although plans now call for the
preliminary hearing to be held on
April 9, it could be delayed should
either the defendant or the plain-

Should a defendant refuse to
appear, or simply not appear for
some other reason after being
given "reasonable" opportunity to
do so, the hearing. and trial may
be held without him.
CSJ 'has no power of subpoena
for either witnesses, or evidence.
However, CSJ may send out a "re-
quest" for a witness to appear, or
for evidence to be furnished. If
the request is not complied with,
this fact may be noted and entered
in the proceedings, and taken into
consideration by the members of
CSJ when they make a decision.

originators of the union, said the
students could be chosen by a
mass meeting of all students of
the college.
Benninga admitted this might
not be the most representative
way of electing students to serve
on the committee. However, he
said this method would be repre-
sentative of all those students in-
terested in reforming the college's
academic policies.
"The faculty members are not
really representative of a major-
ity of the faculty either," Ben-
ninga added. "They are repre-
sentative of those who have an
interest in the administrative
problems of the college and that is
not a majority."
Benninga said he favored stu-
dent parity on the curriculum
committee, but not until the Union
