Roge Two THE MICHIGAN DAILY Sundoy, loch 30, 1969 Poge Two THE MICHIGAN DAILY Sunday. March 30. 1969 The Beaux- m" arts A formal tribute to Duey Ball By ARNOLD WHITE They stepped out onto the stage of Hill Aud. bright and confident, shoes shining, arms swinging proudly, tuxes in place. The Michigan Men's Glee Club, in concert last night, presented "White Tie and Tails"; and it was a fitting farewell to their director of 22 years, Philip A. Duey. The performance o f f e r e d nothing really new, but the group relied on its successful formula of fine singing and pleasant entertainment to keep the audience smiling. After the traditional "Laudes atque Carmina," 'director Duey's program mixed classical selec- tions from all ages with many 19th century romantic selec- tions in the first half. Martin Luther's "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" began with tenors singing pianissimo, grow- ing to full chorus with the har- monies of the hymn. The concert focused on Philip Duey before the intermission. Recalling good memories of his twenty-two year service to the University and reminiscing just a little, he gave us a song, Hoagy Carmichael's "Old Rock-' ing Chair." 1 ' Duey's opera-quality voice has hardly been tarnished by the years. It was good that, after so many years of directing oth- ers in Hill Auditorium, he snonld sing once himself. A long medley, named "Of Thee We Sing," was all Broad- way. Mixing hits from the '50's and '60's, the Glee Club offered Cole Porter's "I Get a Kick Out. of You" among the eight se-.. lections. The group has an excellent medley technique. They blended the various songs smoothly, closing with the favorite "Thank Heaven for Little Girls." The main body of the Club took a rest while the eight-mem- ber Friars took the stage. Open- ing with a soft dreamy tune, they recalled famous dance crazes of the past in a novelty number complete with Friar color about the rhumba.j The Friars are known for the popular song parodies, in past years taking on the Beatles and the Temptations. Last night Tommy 'Roe was the target. With all the possible sweetness they smiled through "I'm so Dizzy." The finale of the evening featured Michigan Songs, Mich- igan and University enthusiasm and spirit over the years were displayed in "I Want to Go Back to Michigan," "Michigan{ Men," and "Go Blue." Of course, "Hail to the Vic- tors" and "The ' Yellow and the Blue" closed the program. Di- rector Philip Duey needs no praise here; his list of accom- plishments has made him well- known, and last night's stand- ing ovation was a*proper tribute.
