By KEITH WOOD Jim Ryun will try to become the first man in NCAA indoor track history. to possess five in- dividuals championships when the NCAA indoor track and field championships open tonight at Detroit's Cobo Arena. Ryun will defend his two-mile championship tonight as a prelude torhis Saturday quest for his third successive mile title. Ryun must win both to achieve the record. The Kansas distance runner outlegged Washington State's Ger- ry Lindgren for the two-mile crown on the same track last year with a winning time of 8:38.9. This year Ryun must face the challenge of at least two run- ners who have posted better per- -?formances. Kerry Pearce of Tex- as-El Paso and Art Dulong of Holy Cross will try to spoil Ryun's bid for the crown. Michigan is the host team for, the meet, and Michigan Athletic j rector, Don Canham, is the eet director. The opening card, iwhich starts at 8:30 tonight, will include finals in the long jump, triple jump, and half-mile, plus trials in seven other events. The other finals will be run tomorrow starting at 2:30. Two other titlists from last year will try for repeat victories tomorrow night. Villanova's ree- ord holder in the 440, Larry James, will put his title on the line against Lee Evans of San Jose State, the only man who con- quered him in the Olympic 400 neters at Mexico City. S The other defending titlist is shot putter John Van Reenen from Washington State. Van Reenen will' receive strong competition from the Kansas due of Steve Wilhelm and Karl Salb. Both men have been consistently sur- passing distances of 60 feet. Michigan's strongest chance for a title will rest with Olympian Ron Kutchinski. Kutchinski was upset in the 1000-yard run at the Big Ten championship, but he still figures to be a top con- tender in the half-mile. The Wolverines' champion two- mile relay squad will be hurt by the loss of All-American Tom Kearney who has been hampered all season by an ankle injury. This year's unit will probaly consist of Kutchinski, Rick Storrey, Paul Armstrong, and Gary Gold. Another bright spot for the Wolverines will be hurdler Larry Midlam. Midlam is the Big Ten title holder in the 70-yard lowsl and has been a consistent winner all season. Michigan has another Big Ten champion in Bob Wedge. who won the triple jump with a leap of 48 feet. Michigan may also be able to, take advantage of the new fresh- man eligibility rule. Wolverine freshman, Gene Brown, has run the 60-yard dash in :06.2. which will probably be fast enough to qualify. But that event will prob- ably feature the strongest field of any in the meet. Among the top names will be Michigan 3tate freshman, Herb Washington, who has consistently run the distance in :06.1. Other freshman competitors for the Wolverines will be Larry Wolfe in the pole pault and Ken Hamil- ton in the two-imle run. Wolfe has vaulted 15-10 and two weeks ago Hamilton ran the two-mile in 8:56.2, almost setting a new var- sity record. Michigan State has another top contender in Bill Wehrwein. Wehr- wein set a new American -ecord in the 600-yard run at the Mich- igan State Relays this year. He is also the Big Ten champion. As has been the case in the past. the meet promises to be one of the greatest shows in indoor tiack and field competition. Rudy to lead Cagers Rudy Tom janovich has been selected by his teammates as captain of teh 1969-1970 Mich- igan Basketball Team. Tom- janovich will succeed Ken Maxey in that role. Tomjanovich, who hails from Hamtramck, has led the Wol- verine cagers in scoring and re- bounding for the last two years. This year he also led the Big Ten in rebounding and finished second to Purdue's Rick Mount in the 1969 conference scoring race. Rudy has received mention in most of the post-season All- American team polls, and was a member of the All-Big T e n first team.
