FOUR THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY. AUTTU 09 FOUR THE MICHIGAN DAILY r ...v..,asca.i, laav u v r. . IV NO SECRETS PASSED Bryant Denies Fix with.-Butts Plan Clay-Liston Fight for '64 q IFIflIP00-k'! ATLANTA (P) - Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant of Alabama said yesterday in federal court he had never received secret information on Georgia's football team from Wally Butts, former athletic direc- tor at Georgia. Bryant took the stand in the fourth day of the trial of Butts', $10 million libel suit against Cur-' tis Publishing Co. Butts filed suit because an article in the Curtis- owned Saturday Evening Post charged the two men rigged the. 1962 Georgia-Alabama game. Rig or Fix? "Did or did not you and Wal- lace Butts throw, rig or fix this game?" he was asked. "Absolutely not," replied Bry- ant. "And if we did we ought to go to jail." Bryant, whose Alabama team won the national championship in 1961, testified that he did not re- member any specific telephone calls to or from Butts last fall. The Post article charged that Butts called Bryant Sept. 13 and gave away "all the significant se- crets that Georgia's team possess- ed." Absolutely None "Will you please state for the court and jury whether in any conversation you had with Coach Senkowski Makes Semi's By The Associated Press QUEBEC - Ray 13enkowski of Hamtramck, Michigan's number- one singles player this year, swept into the semi-finals of the East- ern Canada Tennis Championships yesterday. He downed Bob Bedard, Cana- da's first-ranked player, in a two- hour battle, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Joining Senkowski in the semi's were Whitney Reed, Ham Rich- ardson and Bill Lenoir, making it an all-American affair. Richardson, former top-ranking U.S. player who now is only a part- time performer, whipped Harry Fauquier, Canadian Davis Cupper and Michigan captain, 6-4, 6-1. Reed won over Eduardo Zuleta of Ecuador, 6-1, 6-0, while Lenoir eliminated Rudy Hernando of De- troit, 6-0, 6-1. Butts at any time, he conveyed to you any information relating to any plays or formations for use in the forthcoming game with Ala- bama?" "Absolutely not," Bryant said. "If I had, I wouldn't have taken it because he's for Georgia and I'm for Alabama." NEW YORK (P)-Cassius Clay's backers have tentatively agreed to a title fight between the unbeaten Louisville contender and heavy- weight champion Sonny Liston next year, an attorney for the Clay group said last night. "We wound up our meetings with the Liston people earlier to- day," Gordon Davidson of Louis- ville said, "and our group has given tentative approval to a Lis- ton fight in 1964, maybe in April. The Liston people went back to Philadelphia and are supposed to let us know their decision in a day or two." Davidson said.the failure of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Com- mission to approve Liston's pro- motions firm, Intercontinental Promotions, Inc., doomed a pro- posed Liston-Clay fight in Phila- delphia Sept. 30. Pressed by Time "We knew we couldn't do it this year when Pennsylvania said no to Liston as a promoter of his own fight," Davidson said. "Time was pressing and there just wasn't endugh time left to make any oth- er arrangements." Davidson said even if the Lis- ton group approves the tentative agreement soon there will be no MAJOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Santo's Blast Stops Dod ers By The Associated Press rush to sign any more contracts for the 1964 fight. "With the new tax bill pending in Washington," he said, "it would be silly to sign something now that might cost the fighters a lot of money." Asks About December Earlier yesterday, Liston broke his silence and called Madison Square Garden matchmaker Ted- dy Brenner from Philadelphia to ask about the possibility of a De- cember title fight, probably on home television. Brenner informed the champ that he could offer him no con- crete match at this time but hop- ed to be able to stage a Doug Jones-Ernie Terrell fight Sept. 30 at Las Vegas, the winner of which could be a Liston opponent. The regular weekly TV fights shift back to Friday nights on Sept. 30. Terrell is currently ranked num- ber three after television wins over Cleveland Williams and Zora Folley. Jones was involved in a highly controversial winter bout which went to Clay by the nar- rowest of margins. Plan Reorganizing Of Minor League CHICAGO (P-Baseball's ma- jor-minor league executive com- mittee approved yesterday a plan to reactivate the American Asso- ciation, absorbed less than a year ago in a sweeping reorganization of the minors. Under the proposed plan, the American Association would be- come a six-league team while the Pacific Coast and International Leagues would revert to their pre- vious eight-team status. Both were expanded when the American As- sociation disbanded. CHICAGO-Ron Santo hit his 20th ho-.ier of the season and his second of the game with one out in the 10th inning yesterday, giv- ing the Chicago Cubs a 5-4 victory over the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers. * * * Yankees Still Going WASHINGTON - Ralph Terry held Washington to six hits yes- terday as the New York Yankees won their third straight from the Senators, 3-1. Phil Linz, filling in at third base while Clete Boyer is getting a short rest, hit his second home run in the fifth inning off Don Rudolph to give the Yankees a one-run lead. 'Monster' Loses Again DETROIT-The Detroit Tigers hung a late-inning defeat on re- lief ace Dick Radatz for the sec- ond straight game yesterday when Rocky Colavito drove in the win- ning run with a long 10th-inning single for a 6-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Radatz was so angered by the loss he tossed his glove all the way from the mound into the seats behind the first base dugout. The loss was only the fourth for Ra- datz but his third in six days. The Tigers, held to three hits for seven innings, went ahead 5-2 with a four-run rally in the eighth as Norm Cash hit a three-run homer. Twins Sweep Angels LOS ANGELES - Lefthander Dick Stigman pitched a six-hitter for his 12th victory yesterday as the Minnesota Twins completed a sweep of a three-game series by defeating the Los Angeles An- gels, 3-0. * * * Azcue Steals for Tribe BALTIMORE-Joe Azcue scored both Cleveland runs - one on a steal of home-and Dick Donovan pitched a thre hitter last night as the Indians , whipped Baltimore, 2-0. Donovan was locked in a pitch- ing duel with Baltimore's Steve Barber when Azcue slid home on the frontend of a double steal in the seventh inning to break a scoreless tie. Greets Old Mates NEW YORK - Duke' Carmel ruined his old St. Louis Cardinal mates yesterday with an eighth- inning tie-breaking home run for a 3-2 New York Mets victory. * * * . Friend Outlasts Sadowski PITTSBURGH - Don Clenden- on doubled with one out in the ninth inning, scoring Bill Mazer- oski with the only, run of the game for a 1-0 Pittsburgh victory over Milwaukee last. night. The run broke up a brilliant pitching duel betveen the Pirates' Bob Friend and rookie Bob Sadow- ski of the Braves. * * * Cinci. Rallies over Phils PHILADELPHIA - Home runs by Frank Robinson and Tommy Harper and a three-run seventh- inning rally built around five straight hits carried Cincinnati to a 6-3 victory over Philadelphia last night. The Phillies' runs came in the ninth when Roy Sievers homered off John Tsitouris after singles by Johnny Callison and Tony Gon- zales. Tsitouris had a four-hit shutout going into the inning, but needed Bill Henry's relief help to get his eighth victory against five defeats. Peters Whips A's KANSAS CITY - Left-hander Gary Peters recorded his sixth straight victory last night, get- ting home run support from Dave Nicholson in the Chicago White Sox' 5-3 victory over Kansas City. Nicholson, who banged a key two-run double against the A's Wednesday night, hit his 17th homer with a teammate on base in the second inning.
