THE MICHIGAN DAILY agers Host Ohio State JAILY n T V Contest oday 4 ------ WAYNE MORTBERG Michigan meets another ob- stacle on its course toward a pos- sible Big Ten basketball cham- pionship when it meets the Ohio State Buckeyes this afternoon at 4:30 at Yost Field House. The game, which will be re- gionally televised by CBS will pro- vide another stern test for the title-minded Wolverines. Surpris- ingly enough, the sparkling charges of coach Bill Perigo now warrant consideration for the championship, although the Wol- verines were assigned by the ex- perts in the pre-season polls to finish in the Big Ten second divi- sion. Boasting a victory over Purdue and a close 83-78 loss to North- western, the co-leader along with Illinois in the Big Ten race. Mich- igan will be out to improve tneir position in the league with a vic- tory at the expense of the under- dog Buckeyes. OSU Tough However, the Ohio State team cannot be taken lightly, as they lost to Illinois by only one point when the Illini scored a field goal in the dyingumoments of the con- test. The Buckeyes depend upon high scoring Larry Huston and veteran Joe Carlson to bear the brunt of their attack. The Michigan team will be pre- pared to give the Buckeyes a rugged struggle as they are led by the high scoring trio of M. C. Burton, George Lee and John Tid- well combined with the play- making skill of Terry Miller. Add to this foursome Lovell Farris, who worked his way up from the reserves to the starting five and then proceeded to become the' all-star center at the Motor City Tournament, and you have an outstanding team. Outstanding Rebounding One of the main factors in the fine showing of the Wolverines has been their outstanding re- bounding. When the season start- ed, it was felt that the Wolverines were lacking in rebounding strength, so essential to a good team, because there was little height on the squad. But determination and hustling under the backboards by Lee and Burton have accounted for the surprising showing of the Wolver- ines in the rebounding depart- I SICK, SICK, SICK . . l. by JuLE 1 2?+fK !I I S RAL; ; -WAS S '.{Y F LE(, &il"Y 1 J 1 1 GA! 6 !R! iThf- :r T {TWTr ' ' CIOCbAT 1V OM ;q, w,,1 T T !(.K EL O1V~-~3 0 C , I.WE, *70hJj ;f-'ET Crn - A, FIC- , -V.X " Sti2l -rtXlt CXT TO FCkT Ate D N RT$ ci TIJ$ ~WF SROSE it~ 4LIAOT TOKLP -Daily-Peter Anderson DEEP IN THOUGHT-Michigan basketball mentor Bill Perigo studies the action carefully in the recent Motor City Tournament. His squad's impressive victories in Detroit and their upset win over Purdue has earned them the label of "darkhorse" in the Big Ten race. Ca0gers Agree To Play In West Coast Tourne By MIKE GILLMAN Michigan's basketball team, well satisfied with this year's ventures into tournament play, has accept- an invitation to play in a major tourney again next winter. Michigan, along with two other Big Ten teams, will participate in the first annual Christmas Invita- tional Basketball Tournament to be held in Los Angeles on Dec. 28-30. In addition to the Wolver- ines, the other Western Confer- ence teams that have been invited are the two that are currently tied for first place in ,the league, Il- linois and Northwestern. Plans have been drawn up for an eight team tournament - the first major college cage meet ever held in Los Angeles. The Wolverine entrants in the tion which will seat 18,000. Four of the entrants will come from the West, including co-hosts UCLA and Southern California. West Virginia Enters The other two Coast represen- tatives will be California and Stanford. As its fourth entry, the contingent from east of the Rockies will have the perennial southern power, West Virginia. Michigan, until this year, had not participated in any of the winter tourneys. Coach Bill Peri- go indicated that this had not been intentional, but that the Wolverine schedule has always been filled. This year however, Perigo's cag- ers saw action in two tournaments and found them to their liking. Although they dropped the open- er in the Kent State Tournament to a strong Tennessee quintet, they easily took the consolation round from the host team, Kent. Motor City Romp The Wolverines went on to prove their mettle in the Motor City Tournament. They walked away with all the honors at De- troit by topping a strong field of Princeton, Army and Detroit, and placing three men on the all- tourney five. Perigo, justifiably happy with his team's performance in these two outings, commented that, "These tournaments are a lot of help before league play - playing on two consecutive nights is good for our conditioning." The meet in Los Angeles will' provide plenty of this condition- ing as each team is guaranteed three games in a double elimina- tion schedule. Entertaining as it does the top Pacific Coast teams, this will be one of the major invitationals in the nation next year. The tourna- ment will be a part of a week of sports in Los Angeles that will precede the Rose Bowl football game.
