ALTERATIONS

John Tidwell, Michigan's most
coisteny impressive basketball
player thus far, is fast becoming
its most overshadowedscager-and
in more ways than one.
Against Butler Friday night, the
classy sophomore from Herrin. Ill.
pumped in 24 points as Michigan
won its third non-Conference clash
in four attempts.
Yet Tidwell became the Wol-
verines' forgotten man when M. C.
Burton found the range for 38
points, a new Michigan scoringt
record.
Reaching a week further back
into memory, it is recalled that
Tidwell topped the Maize and Blue

scoring with another 24 markers,
this time against Tennessee. I
But once again the crowd's at-
tention was focused on another
Wolverine - George Lee, whose
spectacular rebounding, defensive
play and 23 points simply stale
the show.{
Let's face it. Tidwell, with his
smooth and steady style of play
isn't a dazzler. But the way he
plays, he doesn't have to be to
satisfy coach Bill Perigo.
Very Poised'
"The kid is so poised out there
for a sophomore it sometimes
frightens you," Perigo recently toldj
a luncheon gathering of Detroit
sportswriters and broadcasters.
"He's more than come along at
this stage."
Besides being "overshadowed"
by his teammates, it's quite likely
as the season progresses that Tid-
well will, at times, be the Big Ten's
shortest center.
The 6'3" "little giant" appears
to be the best bet to spell Gordie
Rogers.
Moved to Center
Against Butler Rogers received
his fourth foul early in the second
half and was dismissed from fur-
ther action. Tidwell was moved
from his guard spot tp the pivot
and held his opponent to four
points the rest of the game.
Why Tidwell at center whena
Burton (6'5") and Lee (6'4") are
available from either forward posi-
tion? It's an easy answer for
Perigo.
Eight Good Guards
"We have eight good guards,
any one of which we could put In
there anytime. But we're not quite;
so fortunate at the forwards,' saysI
Perigo. Thus, Tidwell remains the
logical choice.
The Wolverines' "Big Three" of
Tidwell, Lee and Burton are cur-
rently tightly bunchedin the team
scoring derby with the soph sport-
ing a three-point bulge over Lee
and a six-point margin over Bur-
ton.
