Hanley then came to Michigan, and as a member of the freshman team, participated in the great- est shellacking ever given the var- sity. At the end of his freshman year, Hanley traveled to Yale for the National AAU championships. Swimming in his first AAU meet, the youthful Wolverine moved into the spotlight as one of the "greats" in the nation. He whipped the veteran star, Ford Konno, in the 220-yd. freestyle for the first of his five national championships. Sets Records The next summer, Hanley was still on the rise; first he set a new world's record for the 100-meter freestyle with a dazzling :56.3; then he went on to Detroit and qualified for the American Olym- pie squad and the trip to Mel- bourne. For three months Hanley trained in Hawaii and Australia. Against the greatest swimmers in the world, he won a second place silver medal for the 800- meter freestyle relay, and finished well up in the 100-meter event. More Records Returning from "down under," Hanley hadn't finished with the record book. In the Big Ten championships at Minneapolis, he swam perhaps his finest race as he broke both the worlds' records for the 220-yd. and 200-meters. Then came 1957, a year in which Hanley didn't faintly resemble the Hanley of previous years. A frank and outspoken athlete, Hanley said, "I was just fed up with swimming. If the desire and en- thusiasm are gone, so is the great- ness." Not "Over the Hill" When asked if he thought he was on the decline, he comment- ed, "I don't believe it is possible for a swimmer my age to be 'over the hill.' Each year it becomes harder and harder to get in shape and harder to get interest aroused, DICK HANLEY .. .out to regain form but I'm stronger than ever before. With the '60 Olympics coming, my desire to swim should increase more and more." Speaking of the present and Michigan's chances, Hanley con- cluded, "I don't see how this team can possibly be beat."
