By TOM WITECKI ' By winning five of their last six contests Montreal's red hot Cana-' diens have broken up the previous- ly tight National Hockey League race and have threatened to make it a runaway in much the same' way as they did last year. But this is more or less to be expected since the Canadiens were picked unanimously to success- fully defend their crown and again dominate the league, earning them the title of the "Yankees of the NHL." This label fits quite well since the Canadien organization in many, ways resembles that of the peren- nial American League Champions. Similar to Yankees Similar to the Yankees, Les Canadiens boast a large stock of dependable veterans including the ageless Maurice ''The Rocket'' Richard, Floyd Curry and Doug Harvey, and also a fine crop of young stars such as Jean Beliveau, Bernie Goeffrion, Dickie Moore, and "The Pocket Rocket" Henry Richard. The source of these stars is a huge scouting and farm organiza- tion which stretches the length' and breadth of our neighbor to the north. Like the Yankees, the Ca- nadiens have learned to dominate. this all-important segment of pro- fessional sport. MacDonald Latest Product The latest product of this sys- tem is Alvin MacDonald who has just come into prominence in the last few weeks. The young left winger scored three goals and add- ed three assists to aid the Cana- diensin their recent burst. The only contender which has managed to stay near the high- flying Frenchmen during the past week have been the Detroit Red Wings and they needed some last- second heroics to do it. Led by Gordie Howe, who is seeking the 400th goal of his NHL career after clicking for number 398 and 399 last week, the Wings trail Mon- treal by four points. Toronto Comes to Life Toronto, which wallowed around the cellar throughout the first part of the season has suddenly come to life, winning three of their last four contests. Part of the Maple Leafs' recent success is being at- tributed to newly-appointed Coach Bert Olmstead who replaced the fired Billie Reay. NHL STANDINGS W L T Pts. It will be the seventh title de- fense for the ageless Moore, who goes into the fight as a 13-5 choice over the rugged 29-year-old fisher- man from Baie Ste. Ann, N. B., Canada. Stopped Anthony Moore, who claims to be 41 de- spite his mother's insistence that he is three years older, last de- fended his title on Sept. 20, 1957. He stopped Tony Anthony, the number one contender, in the seventh round of their scheduled 15 rounder. The champion gained his title in 1952 when he decisioned Joey Maxim. Since then he has de- fended his title successfully against Maxim twice, Harold Johnson, the number two contender, Bobo Ol- son, Yolande Pompey, and An- thony. Moore has twice failed to cap- ture the heavyweight crown. He was stopped by Rocky Marciano in nine rounds in Sept., 1955, and was knocked out by Floyd Patter- son in the fifth round of their June, 1956 bout. Has 126 Knockouts Moore has fought a total of 204 times, posting a record of 174-24-6 including 126 knockouts. He has been stopped six times. Durelle is the third-ranked con- tender behind Anthony and John- son. The Canadian knocked out Johnson when they met three years ago. The challenger has won four straight fights, outpointing France's Germinal Ballarin, knock- ing out Mike Holt in the ninth round of a grueling British Empire title fight, outpointing Freddie Mack, and stopping Lou Jones in the second round at Monckton, Que., Oct. 2. The last man to beat him was Anthony, who stopped him in the seventh round of their New York fight last March. Durelle's overall record is 76-19- 2 including 39 via the knockout route. He has lost six the same way. A crowd of over 12,000 is ex- pected to witness the fight which starts at 10 p.m. (EST). It will be telecast coast to coastover ABC, although there will be no radio broadcast. Regardless of whether he wins or not, Moore will receive a guar- anteed $100,000 or 40 per cent of all receipts including television. The challenger is guaranteed $ 12,- 000 against 20 per cent of the gate receipts. inU Tne's running out - Don't forget to buy your UNICEF Greeting cards on sale Tuesdays and Wednesdays until Xmas.
