WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 195 THE MICHIA N DAILY t Coaches Discuss Detroit Tourney CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING 3' By FRED KATZ Special to the Daily DETROIT - It's taken seven long years, but Motor City Bas ketball Tournament officials hav finally gotten Michigan to com pete in their annual four-team holiday meet. And they're tickled pink. With the addition of the Wol verines, the tournament will have its most attractive field in history Coach Bob Calihan of host Uni versity of Detroit, speaking at a tip-off luncheon yesterday for De- troit and area sports writers and broadcasters, said that last year was the first time the tourney had failed to show a profit. Expects Success "But with the appearance of Michigan, plus Army, Princeton and the U. of D., we're expecting our most successful tourney ever," said Calihan. Each of the competing schools receives a guaranteed share of the gate plus an equal four-way split of the remaining receipts. Michigan students expecting to be in Detroit Dec. 29 or 30 (or both) can pick up tickets at a reduced rate of $.75 per session from the Athletic Administration Building anytime before school is dismissed on the 19th. Regular tickets for the tourna- ment to be held at the U. of D. Memorial Building are $2.Q0 and $1.50. Michigan Favored The Wolverines, on the basis of two victories in their first three games, have been thrust into the favorite's role. They play Prince- ton at approximately 9 p.m. Dec. 29 immediately following the tour- ney's curtain raiser between De- troit and Army at 7:30. The final and consolation game will be played the following night at the same times. The tournament will be only the second for Michigan since Bill Perigo was named head coach seven years ago. The first came last weekend when the Wolverines finished third in the Midwestern Invitational at Kent, O. Kent Tournament Helped Giving a brief run down of his club and individual players, Perigo told the gathering "that the Kent Tourney helped us quite a bit condition-wise." But he also bewailed thQ lack of the depth that became apparent in the closing minutes of Michi- gan's 80-66 loss to Tennessee' Not without his keen wit, Perigo added, "We might be -beaten on the basketball floor a few times this year, but I doubt if anyone could top us in the classroom. We have three pre-meds, one archi- tecture student and an economics Inajor in the starting lineup." State Tops Again Calihan presented an ominous warning that makes Michigan and the rest of the Big Ten shudder. "This Michigan State team that beat us Saturday, 87-51, is better n than it was a year ago (the Spar- - tans finished second in the Con- e ference)." - And what's more, Calihan as- serts that jumping -Jack center Johnny Green has not lost any of his greatness of previous seasons. "He's a year older, a year smart- e er and a foot higher," said Cali- . han, a man who should know, a C Coference r Meetings Commence By The Associated Press s CHICAGO -The Rose Bowl series, a potential round - robin conference football schedule and final action on a recruiting change are matters facing the Big Ten at its annual winter meeting open- ing today. The current Rose Bowl contract with the Pacific Coast Conference extends only through the 1960 game. With the PCC folding next July 1, it is hoped the contract can continue, without renegotia- tion, with what is expected to be- come a new conference. The new group would consist of California, UCLA, Southern California, Wash- ington and possibly Stanford. PCC Signs Contracts The PCC, meeting in Pasadena this week, has signed contracts for the 1960 Rose Bowl game and a spokesman said the game, as now contemplated, would include one of the present members of the PCC. The contracts are expected to be presented during the Big Ten session. The proposal for a 10-game football schedule, effective in 1965 and leading to a full round-robin slate of conference games by 1969, will be up for final approval. It was approved tentatively last May in the Big Ten's spring meeting. Nine Game Maximum At present, each Big Ten school plays a maximum nine - game schedule which includes between 6 and 7 conference engagements. Also up for final action is a re-- cruiting change which would per- mit coaches to visit prospective athletes off the campus and au- thorize schools to pay expenses for a prospect's visit to the campus. Athletic directors and faculty representatives also will receive a proposal from Big Ten track coaches to bar aliens from NCAA track and field championships. This is a formality of going through channels to have the Big Ten present the recommendation- at the NCAA convention in Cin- cinnati next month. WANTED TO RENT OFF-STREET PARKING.
