Although the Wolverine football and basketball squads of the past few years have been ediocre-bordering-on-miserable, one need only look past the head- ne teams to find a real champion. Seeking a third straight NCAA own this winter, the 'M' swimming squad has suddenly blossomed ato a powerhouse that has no match in the nation. It all happened rather quickly, three years back, when the Wol- erines backed into the NCAA title room at the Yale pool in New aven, Conn. I say "backed in" because the 'M' squad had placed econd behind Michigan State in the Big Ten Meet. However, the Volverines left no doubt in the nationals, as they walked away with he crown. It's been the same ever since, as the Michigan group took oth Conference and National titles last winter. Don't get me wrong-there has been plenty of competition, both n the Big Ten and NCAA levels, and will continue to be this year. Michigan State has both power and depth, and some of the California chools have top Australian stars, while Yale is always tough. How- ver, under the tutelage of swimming coach Gus Stager and diving aentor Bruce Harlan, the Wolverines have both the personnel and he desire. The team has lost no one from last year's championship quad, and have gained many talented sophomores; so just guess the itcome of the big meets this year. Not Only Swimmers .. . AND FOR MANY YEARS to come, perhaps. There is no reason to think that this powerhouse will die soon. Each year the hustle and ersonality of Stager and Harlan have brought an ever-better crop if freshmen swimmers and divers to Michigan. Ohio State, the former owerhouse has finally been replaced. For the past two years the Michigan swimmers have proved their superiority over the Buckeyes, end with the exception of the fabulous Don Harper, the 'M' divers ave also been supreme. Harper has graduated, and the dream of larlan (a former Buckeye himself) will come true this year: Michi- an will be the swimming and diving power of the nation. Real champions they are, but the best is yet to come-they also ouble as entertainers. You don't believe me? Then you had better ,how up at Varsity Pool this Saturday. In fact, come anyway. The how will be great. It's not every day that one can see both champions f the tank and champions of comedy, too. Stager and Harlan will e showing off their swimmers during the afternoon, and the other outines will form the evening show. You can't afford to miss either. (est Meet This W'ee ... TOME OF THE TEAM MEMBERS have pointed out that the home fans won't get a good chance to see the 'M' champions in action his year. There are a total of six home meets besides this Saturday's xtravaganza, but only one of them against top competition. The Big Cen Relays, which usually pits Michigan against Michigan State in "warm-up" for the Conference Meet, isn't run like a regular contest rnd there is no official team title. The other home meets aren't gainst such rugged opponents, and should generally be 'M' run- Lways. Of course, no matter who the opponent, the 'M' swimmers will be hampions, and will be turning in championship times. They won't eed the cheering, but it's always appreciated. The inference here is, of course, that Michigan swimming fans ad better be on hand this Saturday at the Varsity Pool if they want o see the Wolverines at their best. Otherwise they may have to pack p and travel to see the 'M' men when they repeat as Big Ten and CAA champions.
