THE MICHIGAN DAILY EE BULBS REPRESENT $25: Lights To Record Salvation Army Donations The Best Christmas Gifts BOOKS from WAHR'S I A new sight for Ann Arbor area; residents this Christmas season is the "Tree of Lights." The large tree in front of the Elks Club will represent the amount of donations submitted toj the Salvation Army. For every $25; received, another bulb on the tree will be lit. Various colored bulbs will repre- sent contributions by different groups throughout the city.'Red indicates funds raised by service clubs, blue lights for money raised -by University fraternities and yel- low lights for University sororities. White and purple lights will repre- sent donations from the high school and green from ladies' clubs and groups. Indicates Progress "This new attraction has been instituted not for group recogni- tion alone, but also as an indica- tion to the entire Ann Arbor com- munity of advancement towards the Salvation Army goal which has been set at $10,000 this year," Mrs. Arthur Trevithick, Salvation Army secretary, explained. As the Salvation Army antici- pates a greater need among fami.. lies this year, the goal is slightly higher than it has previously been. Aside from group and organi- zation donations, the majority of funds are raised by contributions to the Kettle.' f The Kettle drive began Novem- ber 28 this year with kettles man- ned regularly by Salvation Army hired workers. To many of these workers the income received dur- ing the Christmas season is their Ask Students For Evening The Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Fred E. Luchs have extended an invitation to all students remaining in Ann Arbor over the holidays to join them between 8 and 11 p.m. Christmas Eve in their home. The evening will be spent in a "sharing of ideas on Christmas Eve customs" by students from the United States and foreign coun- tries, the pastor of the First Con- gregational Church said, with carol singing also playing a prom- inent part in the evening's fes- tivities. Students who wish to attend the party, he said, should call the church tc make arrangements. The tradition, which the Luchs began at Ohio University 20 years ago, was originally for the benefit of "students who could not afford to go home," he commented, add- ing that at that time no foreign students were attending the uni- versity. only means of support, Mrs. Trevi- thick said. Volunteers Man Kettles On special days volunteers from various civic groups man the ket- tles. Dormitories, fraternities and sororities have also volunteered to man the campus kettle. A Thanksgiving collection of canned goods by public schools in the area will supplement monetary donations. The goods are packed by volunteer groups, mainly the Girl Scouts, into food bags to be distributed among various needy families at Christmas. All families that get a food bag also receive a "toy ticket" for each chilp; Tickets are redeemable for toys at the Salvation Army Toy Shop. Provides Gift Funds Children without families are not forgotten by the Salvation Army. It provides funds to the Michigan Children's Aid Society and the Probate Court for the purchase of gifts for children boarding or in juvenils homes. "Admittedly, Christmas is often considered a holiday for children. The Salvation Army tries, however, to help adults who are sometimes forgotten during this season," Mrs. Trevithick noted. Gifts are also given to men in the Veteran's Hospital and in jail, as well as to elderly couples and lonely residents in the Ann Arbor area.
