EMBER 4, 1958 THE MICHIGAN IAILV -_ .r ..:. Baboon CLEMENTS LIBRARY: Relics from Captain Cook's Voyage Exhibited FRANKFURT, Germany (W' -Madame Baboon, who likes steeples but hates needles, was back in the zoo last night after a night out on the town - way up on the town. The two and one-half year old runaway descended from the slender spire of St. Nico- lai's Church after almost 20 hours aloft. Its believed keepers, who had stood watch through a night of ;ub-freezing temperatures, pre- pared a welcome. Btt the baboon took one look at them and was off again across the rooftops. After several hours the ape was trapped by her keepers, who used an apple as bait, and was returned to the zoo. She had broken away when ihe was about to be injected with a tuberculosis vaccine. By PHILIP SHERMAN The spirit of one of the world's greatest explorers has come to the University in an exhibit on Cap- tain Cook in the Clements Library. It is part of a series of exhibits in which the Library will display part of its valuable historical col- lection. Prof. Howard H. Peckham, Di- rector of the Library and faculty member of the history department,{ item in the exhibition" a book containing samples of cloth that Cook had brought back from the South Seas. The book contains about 100 samples of the cloth, which was made by beating the bark of the tappa tree. Cloths Hand Decorated The cloths themselves are all hand decorated, many in patterns similar to the type of designs now fashionable in men's shirts and ties. Each type of cloth, Prof. Peckham explained, has a specific purpose-for tents, for clothing, and even a few on which to make human sacrifices. The whole exhibit consists of a group of books about the voyages of Captain Cook that were writ- ten in the late 1700's following his explorations. All of the books, in- cluding several acquired this sum- mer, are from the Library's own collection, he said. Voyages Successful "All of the three voyages had definite scientific purposes and were successful," Prof. Peckham pointed out. He outlined the spe- cific accomplishments of each of the three trips: Cook's first voyage, lasting from 1768-71 was made in order to ob- serve the transit of Venus across' the sun. Made between 1772 and 1775,1 the second voyage "proved" to geographers of the day that no southern continent (Antartica) ex- isted. On his third voyage, Cook ex- plored much of Alaska and what is now the west coast of the Unit- ed States and Canada and discov- ered Hawaii. Each of these voyages were de- scribed in an "Official Report," issued by the Admiralty, which is on display in the Library, There are also many "unofficial reports" which, Prof. Peckham I CITY NOTICE l I - I a. ,w., , , , ^~ I I in opaque nylon tricot by LORRAINE- )istinctiwe creations ol gracious femininity. .. our luxurious ship and petticoat featuring the [rfT .r eat ~c .n- Pursuant to Council action of Monday, December 1, 1958, a pub- lic hearing will be held on Decem- ber 4, 1958, at 7:30 o'clock p.m., in the Council Chamber, City Hall for the purpose of reviewing pro- visions of the proposed Urban Re- newal plan for the North Central section of the City of Ann Arbor.
