WALT JOHNSON ... award winner Johnson Given Scholastic Award by Detroit M' Club The 'M' Club of Detroit present- ed Wolverine end Walt Johnson with its Patterson Scholarship Award at a banquet held in De- troit Monday evening. The heavy-set right flanker who hails from Dearborn, Mich., received the scholarship which is given every year to the top schol- t , 1 ,. ...+4...... . t "/ " , t astically ranked senior from the Detroit area on the grid squad. More than 8C0 people attended the annual banquet which this Year honored retiring Head Coach Bennie Oosterbaan and his newly named ,successor, Chalmers "Bump" Eliot. Athletic Director H. 0. "Fritz" Crisler was one of many speakers who reminisced and praised Oos- terbaan's 34 years of service to his alma mater as a player and coach. There was time for nostalgia of the past in the banquet room of the Detroit hotel, but there was also a hint of the future when Coach Eliot gave a welcome speech which was directed at the many high school coaches and players in the audience. He said, 'You know full well that our future depends upon you. We want you to know that you are always welcome at Michigan and we want to see you all there this winter and spring." The speech along with other de- velopments seem to indicate that the Wolverine coaching staff is making a serious bid for home grown talent which has in past years escaped to Michigan State and Iowa, in particular. Already local talent like Red- ford's all-state halfback Ken Mike who led his team to the Detroit City Championship seems to be headed for enrollment here next fall. The trouble was. . . Marty was in love with two shirts. With Shirt No. 1, the Van Heusen Century, the serious Marty spent hours in heaven- ly bliss. He worshipped the revolutionary soft collar that won't wrinkle ever. It was Century's one-piece construc- tion that drove him wild. (Other collars never did any- thing for our boy Marty, ex- cept wrinkle madly. You see, other collars are three pieces, fused or sewn together.) With Shirt No. °, the amaz- ing Van Heusen "Vantage," the gay, frivolous Marty lived thelifeofcarefreeabandon. He Cxuld wear it and wear it---- wash it--drip-dry it, or have it tumble-dried automatically -and wear it again in a matter of hours. It was the most mon- ey-saving love he ever had. But when Marty was with one shirt, he missed the other. It was terrible. Like so many others with the same problem, Marty wrote to us. And 'so it came to pass that the Van Heusen " Century-Vantage" was born. This shirt combined theadvantagesof each intoone great shirt-a wash and wear, no-iron, all cotton broadcloth shirt with the soft collar that won't wrinkle ever! And just $5! Have you a problem?
