S2, 1958 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Baltimore Wins Pro Grid Crown CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING I' K.o By CHUCK KOZOLL Six seasons of NFL bumps and bruises finally paid off for the Baltimore Colts Sunday when they clinched the Western Divisior title by subduing the San Fran- cisco 49ers, 35-27. Trailing 27-7 after a shoddy first half, the Colts scored four times in the second stanza. John Unitas combined his league-lead- ing passing arm with the running attack of Lennie Moore and Alan Ameche to dazzle the 49ers for 30 consecutive minutes. Cleveland Wins The Cleveland Browns, looking forward to playing the Colts for the -pro football championship, moved a half-step in the direction of the'Eastern Division title by slithering past the Washington Redskins, 21-14. New York, one game behind the Browns, shivered through 26- degree temperature to satisfy 35,- 000 half-frozen fans by swamping the inept Philadelphia Eagles 24-10. Quarterback Don Heinrich came through with the "must plays" which kept the Giants in the title race and lowered the Eagles into the Eastern Division cellar. Steelers Trip Bears The Chicago Bears, gambling on a Sunday afternoon wein to keep themselves mathematically in the title race, met their Water- loo in Pitt Stadium. Bobby Layne flipped a long pass in the fourth quarter to Jimm Orr wbo scored the final Steeler touchdown which left the Bears on the lean end of a 24-10 score. Los Angeles slipped over the ice- covered Comiskey Park turf for four quarters to set back the Chi- cago Cardinals, 20-14. Billy Wade tossed two long passes in the last Quarter to clinch the Rams' sixth NFL win, and a tie for second' place in the Western Division with the Bears. d e Y " Cl ' Cl 0 , 1 Y r BUSINESS SERVICES Bewitch each and every one of your Christmas Eves NEW CARS MICHIGAN DAILY CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING RATES with a practical gift from the Dillon Shop South Forest 'just off S.U. or at 1111 S.U. In his first season at the field general spot north of the border, Van Pelt led the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 35-28 Grey Cup victory over the Hamilton Tiger- Cats. It was the Manitoba club's first Canadian professional foot- ball title in 18 years. Leads Team The 23-yr.-old Evanston, Ill. resident passed, ran and kicked his team to victory after spotting the Cats to a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter. Leaving no department un- touched, Van Pelt accumulated 22 points, enough to establish a new Canadian mark. The ex-Wolverine contributed to his record total with two touch- downs, two field goals and five conversions. Scores TD's The rookie sensation, who al- most never got a chance to play with the Bombers capped a brilli- ant day with hIs second TD, a one-yd. keeper play at 1:47 of the final quarter that clinched the victory. Move Ploen American fans who watched the game on the Canadian television network may have noticed another outstanding former American col- lege quarterback in action, but at the wingback post. That would be Iowan Kenny Ploen who was moved over to in order to allow both he and Van Pelt to play regu- larly. Van Pelt, speaking before the TV cameras following his great performance, revealed why he chose to play Canadian football. "I decided on Winnipeg and Canada because I wanted to play offensive football, something which I wouldn't have been able to do in the United States," said Van Pelt. Little did he suspect when he made that decision that for one day, at least, he would be playing that kind of football wel enough to be acclaimed Winnipeg's adopted son.a' typewriters, and have your type- writers repaired at a typewriter ashop.
