THME MICHIGAN DAILY New Landing Light System' Willow Run Airport's new elec- tronic flash landing lights were installed Thursday night. The lights were commissioned by the Civil Aeronautics Adminis- tration with a demonstration for airline and airport officials and newsmen. The system, which is called the Electronic Flash Approach Sys- tem, was installed recently at the south-west end of the instrument landing runway. Poor Visibility Use This lighting system can be' used under all types of poor visi- Allity, and can be seen at greater distances than could the former approach lighting system at Wil- low Run, according to officials of the airport. Willow Run is now the fourth civil airport in the country to have the system installed by the Civil{ A e r o n a u t i c s Association. At the end of the runway are 24 strobeacons which develop 30 million candlepower apiece. The systems provide a blue-white1 "fireball" pointing a direct line to the end of the runway. N The synchronized lights flash every 1/5000 of a second. The to- - tal effect is a fireball that travels down the runway at a speed of over 4,000 miles per hour toward the runway. Since each of the strobeaconI lights flash for such a short' amount of time, the pilots are not blinded by the light, a SAA engi- neer explained, The present electronic system was adopted as standard by the CAA a little over a year ago. More~; than 10 years were spent on de- veloping the system. Burn Continuously Not only the strobeacons are used at the Willow Run Airport; in connection with the strobea- cons a series of lights which burn continuously at a low intensity is used. This reduces the glare which the pilot is subjected to, it was ex- plained. Basically the system works in the following way: A pilot flying into the airport is lined up with' the runway by use of the "fire- ball" pointer which directs him to the end of the instruments ap- proach runway. The other lights are used to aid the pilot in orient- ing the plane with the horizon. Fall Talks On Science, To Disband Prof. Frederick T. Haddock of the engineering college and the astronomy department will deliver the final lecture in the fall sci- ence series at 8:30 a.m. today in the Ann Arbor High School. The series, initiated for Ann Ar- bor public school students, will be resumed sometime next semes- ter, John Rosembergy, high school science department chairman, -said. Members of the city's Board of Education have been invited to attend today's lecture. Rosem- bergy added that any interested student in the public school sys- tem or interested individuals may also attend. In conjunction with the lecture series, a science research program has been established. Forty-five high school students who demon- strated superior ability and spe- cial interest in science were cho- sen to participate in the program. They meet weekly, following the lectures.
