, NOVEmBER S, 1959 THE MICHIGAN DAILY 1 LSU Meets Duke Tonight; Army Favored over Rice flAIL ('CLASSIFI SICK, SICK, SICK . By BILL ZOLLA Unbeaten and untied Louisiana State, ranked number one nation- ally by the Associated Press, is favored to roll over a hard-luck Duke tonight at Baton Rouge. Looking to their pounding 220- pound halfback, Billy Cannon, and ace center and linebacker Max Fugler, the Tigers hope to come closer to the Southeastern Con- ference title and the Sugar Bowl bid. All-American Candidates Both Fugler and Cannon were recently selected as All-America candidates, and the lineman's fine play in last week's Mississippi con- test earned him the Lineman of the Week award. Cannon is the SEC'S top ground gainer. Duke's split-T offense is led by the end sweeps of halfbacks Wray Carlton and George Dutrow. In a top intersectional struggle, Army's Cadets travel to Houston to face the Rice Owls. They bring with them the nation's top offense and the lonesome end formation. Ranked number three in the coun- try and led by their new touch- down twins, halfbacks Pete Dawk- ins and Bob Anderson, the Black Knights are a seven-point choice. Auburn, puts it number five rat- ing on the line today as it faces a comparatively weak Mississippi State squad. Although undefeated and tied but once, Auburn has been squeaking by with the nar- rowest of margins; last week the Tigers defeated Florida, 6-5. Sooners Heavy Favorites The Sooners of Oklahoma, up one notch from the number seven slot they occupied last week, should have little trouble in crush- ing Iowa State. The perennial Big"' Eight champs, having whipped their only serious competition last Saturday in the person of Colo- rado, are now virtually assured of another crown and the Orange Bowl invitation. In another important intersec- tional clash, Notre Dame's re- bounding eleven takes on a tough N.om' ; % OQTRI GOVCRh Kk Y a. I 7 L1AI J OTo KNOW I r l. TOx6U( . -T Td.AT l Pittsburgh team. The Irish are counting on the passing of George Izo to offset the double quarterback threat which Pitt presents. Mississippi, ranked number nine and beaten only by LSU, faces Houston, and only .can hope that the SEC leaders and Auburn are upset. The Air Force, tenth ranked, plays Denver. Top Passers In the Ivy League, the two top passers meet head on as Cornell opposes Brown, Tommy Skypeck, Cornell's quarterback who has led his team to four Ivy wins, will duel with the league's leading passer, Frank Finney. Clemson, led by one of Dixie's best signal-callers, Harvey White, figures in a good deal of bowl speculation and will attempt to4 win convincingly in their game, against Georgia Tech. In the wide-open Southwest, a terrific passing duel is anticipated as Southern Methodist and ai healthy Don Meredith encounter their old enemy, Texas A&M.c Charley Milstead, of the Aggies,2 the country's leader in total of-1 fense, and Meredith, back in shapei after missing three games, will fill1 the air with their aerials.; ter H416A Tit, T C~fWA- Alk £rTFR LOIOF 6 vQT-f5 I&~ctgp \ . BOB HARRISON ... Sooner center In the Far West, Coast leader Oregon State will attempt to stay on top of the heap as it meets Washington State; runner-up Cal- ifornia takes on UCLA. Other Games In other games of interest, bowl- minded North Carolina faces Vir- ginia; Texas Christian meets Mar- quette; Navy takes on Maryland; Missouri, unbeaten so far in the Big Eight is an underdog to Colo- rado. Rutgers, the only other un- beaten and untied major college, plays Lafayette. By CLIFF MARKS Rich Miller played the role of hero for Phi Delta Tau yesterday as his team nicked Delta Tau Delta 7-6 in overtime in a "B" semifinal social fraternity first place playoff game. Miller caught a pass from Jim Assbeck on the last play of the game to knot the score at 6-6, and then pulled in a toss from Barry Marshall on the last play of the overtime to insure the one point victory. Delta Tau Delta had scored first on a pass from Bob Carlson to Tom Hudak. Air Science Wins Ina thrilling first place Faculty Championship playoff tilt, Air Science edged Zoology 7-6 in an- other overtime. The regulation time had ended in a 0-0 deadlock. Ira Kaine passed to Ed White for the Air Science six pointer, and I then a few moments later Clyde' Eriksen gathered in a desperation heave from Jack Bursh to tie the score again. The winners stopped the last Zoology running play cold to wrap up the game. Independent Games Independent action saw the Rab- ble Rousers squeak by the Evansf Scholars 8-6 with a safety pro- viding the margin of victory. Norm Campbell scored for the winners and Ed Gates for the losers. Other independent games found Kappa Alpha Psi capturing a 1-0 overtime win over Owen Co-op, Cooley whipping the Pioneers 8-0, and 1207 taking the measure of the Meatchoppers 14-0. Two more Faculty Champion- ship encounters were played, with Sociology %efeating Chemistry 10-6 in the second place playoffs, and Business Administration smashing Willow ,sun 14-6 in third place playoff action. With the new Van Heusen Vantage Sport Shirts, all you do is add water . . . and presto ... a fresh, handsome sport shirt springs to life be- fore your very eyes. And a sport shirt that's all cotton! Is it a miracle? Is it a powder? Is it a pill? A grind? Read on. You see, the new Van Heusen Vantage Sport Shirts work this way. First, you buy one (this is terribly impor- tant), then you wear it for a while. Then you remove it from your pampered body, drop it into the sink, and ADD WATER. In moments, a new sport shirt begins to appear, a sport shirt as fresh and new-looking as the one you bought in the store. Amazed, you remove it from the water, hang it up for a bit, and it's ready to wear. Friends will ask, "How do you manage to afford a new shirt every day?" You will an- swer,"I was left a huge sum of money by an aunt in Texas." And we will not divulge your secret! The all cotton Van Heusen Vantage Sport Shirts that drip-dry so quickly (tumble- dry automatically, too) and wear so wonderfully are avail- able in a wide range of checks, stripes and solids. All have sewn-in stays that can't get lost and keep your collar al- ways neat. They cost a mere $5.00. (It's time you wrote home, anyhow.) And remem- ber, all you need do is ADD WATER. If you haven't any water, we'll send some FREE. Write Phillips-Van Heusen Corp., 417 Fifth Avenue, New York 16, N. Y.
